i'm larry beil in for ama dates.was back with his family after a harrowing experience in north korea. the 85-year-old was held for over a month for alleged crimes committed during the korean war. there was a fire at this apartment house in alameda. it left five people homeless. the fire was caused by a short and a power cord in a second floor bedroom. it is another extremely cold night in the bay area. several cities reporting temperatures below freezing and the cold snap is expected to run through next week. several bay area shelters are opening their doors earlier and staying open later for the homeless. at least four people have died in the past two weeks from exposure. as cold as it feels here, it is actually much worse in other parts of the country. roads are treacherous. this video shows snow in downtown dallas, texas, power lines are down and flights have been canceled and there is even more to come. here is abc news reporter chuck sievertson. >> 16 people have died in the freeze gripping the u.s. many died on

i'm ama daetz. we do begin with developing news. a chemical cloud caused a major health concern in san leandro. our reporter is there. lisa, what are officials saying? >> reporter: ama, just a little while ago the roads opened up. and the problems, though, started right behind me in this building. that's a shipping and receiving department of a company called associated aerospace activities. jet engine material is manufactured here. at around 6:15 tonight, those who live in the area noticed a strong sul sulfur smell in the air and saw a haze over the building. the fire department realized it wasn't a fire but a vapor of some sort. the hazmat team was called in to investigate. >> a piece of machinery operating inside was still functioning and operating and overheating, mixed in with the chemicals that were in the machinery and created a gaseous based environment. >> this smell what it could do to you. i have a 6-year-old granddaughter and a 3-month-old. >> so you were worried. >> yeah. >> reporter: h

i'm ama daetz. we are now down to 23 hours before children's hospital oakland can remove as'-year-old girl -- 13-year-old girl from a ventilator, doctors said jahi mcmath was brain dead. a facility in california cannot take her. reporter: john jahi's mcmath's family and friend are trying hard to line up a facility so they can take jahi out of oakland children's hospital and they now have less than 23 hours to do that. the deadline, tomorrow, 5:00 p.m. by text this evening, the family tells me these are critical hours. jahi's family learned that a facility in southern california they hoped would accept her, can no longer do that. at the church of august all faiths in oakland, the pastor for jahi others mother had hoped to raise money to pay for the transfer but the even was cancelled after news the facility could not jahi. instead the pastor led the church in prayer. >> i was informed via the attorney to not have the fundraiser because we're still trying to solidify a facility for jahi. and we defini

good evening, i'm ama daetz. let's go right to forecaster spencer christian for a look at how cold it is in the bay area right now. >> it is very chilly. the high temperatures today reached only into the upper 40s. nobody hit 50 degrees. clear skies right now, and temperatures will drop sharply overnight. a freeze warning in effect for all of the bay area for the next two nights except san francisco, from 10:00 p.m. to 9 al. -- 9:00 a.m. we expect subfreezing temperatures and exposed pipes could burst and there's an increased risk of hypothermia. right now as you're looking live from our exploratorium camera, here's our forecast for lows the next three morning. monday and tuesday morning, lows in the upper 20s around the bay and around freezing on the coast. also relief on wednesday, but just a little less cold, and adding to this, as we look over san francisco from the sutro car -- tower cam, tomorrow is our second "spare the air" day. i'll give you a look at when it might warm up a little, a little later. >> ab
