amanda berry disappeared less than a year later just blocks away. was last seen april 21st, 2003, the day before her 17th birthday. amanda was leaving her job at a burger king. gina dejesus was last seen about a year later on april 2nd, 2004. she was 14 years old and near her school. the girls were last seen within blocks of each other. and they escaped yesterday from a house that was only about three miles from where they were kidnapped. as we told you earlier, three brothers have been arrested. the owner of the house, ariel castro, used to work as a school bus driver and was questioned in 2004 for leaving a child unattended on a bus. but police said there was no sign of a crime. >> number one, he was interviewed extensively relative to this complaint that we had. he was not a suspect in any other complaint. this was a -- he was a bus driver who inadvertently, so he says, left a kid on a bus, went in for a lunch break, came back and then found the young man. number two, our policies are solid. every single lead was followed up, no matter how small.

we're hearing from the hero in all of this, the neighbor who heard amanda berry's cries for help. he helped her to call 911. his name is charles ramsey. he explains how amandaer aboutry finally got free. >> i see this girl and she is just going nuts on the door. i'm like, what is your problem? are you stuck? just open the door. she says i can't, he got it locked. i looked how he has it. only enough to reach out and grab the mail and close the door. we, naturally going to pry it open. that didn't work. so we had to kick open the bottom. luckily that door was aluminum. it was cheap. she clipped out with her daughter. she went to my "house." we called 911. when the police get here, she says there are three more girls up there. the and then that's what gina --, that's what gina dejesus and they brought two more girls out. >> you saw amanda berry? >> ain't that something? martha: ain't that something. oh, my gosh. his store is incredible. he had barbecues at the home with the owner. never suspected that anything like this was going on. bill: story brings to mind a lot of other cases we

why didn't they run out with amanda berry? do we have details on that? >> well, we know that, as we heard, that they were not bound, that they could have run out and escaped with amanda berry. but it's likely that they were too afraid to. we've learned that, from sources, that ariel castro over the years would test the girls. he would pretend like he was leaving the home and stay around to see if they attempted to flee. if any of them attempted to flee he would punish them, discipline them. in this case it was likely they were just too afraid that he would return and that they would once again be disciplined. >> all right. pamela brown reporting live for us. thank you for that. >>> and police in ohio had a close encounter with ariel castro in 2008, even threatening him with arrest but it never happened. take a look at this police dash cam video. it show answer officer following castro as a suspect. pulls his motorcycle into a gas station. listen to part of their confrontation. >> let me see your driver's license. let me see your driver's license, please.
