amara walker joins us now live from a gas station in atlanta, georgia.out these soaring costs? >> well, jake, here in georgia, the average price per gallon for regular gas is about $4.16. that is the lowest average in the country right now. but look, overall, what we're seeing is a major spike compared to this time period last year when nationwide on average, we were paying about $3 a gallon, believe it or not. look, i spoke with a lot of drivers here at this quick trip gas station who are telling me it's really hitting them hard in the wallets. every cent is making a difference to them in terms of how long they're driving around to find the cheapest gas station. in terms of their summer travel plans, some say, look, they have a lot of pent-up traveling they wanted to do because of the pandemic. they planned to continue with those road trip plans, but others tell me they're reconsidering. >> i want to go this summer to florida. and then i want to go to savannah. and those are like close places. but if my gas don't allow it, i can't go because it will aff

i'm amara walker in today for fredericka whitfield. the price of gas in the u.s. is hitting levels never seen before. aaa saying the national average is now $5 a gallon, a new all-time high. prices climbing at a dramatic pace, 60 cents in the last month alone. more than 20 states are now over that average. california the highest at $6.43. cnn's paul vercammen is live at a gas station in l.a. paul, how are people reacting to these very high gas prices in california? >> reporter: they're reacting with shock and they're in agony. if you look behind me, this gas station is considered a discount at $6.09 a gallon. as you articulated, here in california the average now, $6.42. what drives all of this, california has an extremely high gas tax at 51 cents per gallon. these taxes used to improve roads and infrastructure and whatnot. for these vendors we're talking to today, they're absolutely getting jackhammered by these prices. a family rental business, party rental business, busy time of the year, weddings, graduations, father's day around the corner, what takerhey're d

cnn's amara walker joining us live with the numbers. hey are undeterred, amara. >> reporter: they are undeterred, brianna. it's really remarkable the shear number of people who have been hitting the road over the holiday weekend despite those record gas prices. right now the national average sans at $4.67 for regular gasoline. if you compare that to prices around the same time period last year, prices were hovering around $3 a gallon. look, it's virtually impossible right now to find gas below $4 a gallon, in fact, there are seven states that are at that $5 mark. new york and arizona are pennies away from hitting that average, but per usual california taking the cake on this one with a sky high price, the highest price in the nation at $6.19 on average for a gallon. that's $2 more than here in the state of georgia which at $4.16. i want to show you this video, though, in los angeles if you take a close look your eyes are not deceiving you, over $8 a gallon for regular unleaded gasoline there. look, still the aaa is estimating that about
