i am very honored at salon books, wonderful book store and i am thrilled to be featuring a book here. more real people should share their stories, the fathers that are the focus of this book and i become part of this group five years ago but it predated my presence. this is an informal group that was organized in the whites community by a group of men including andre christian who will be speaking later ron, johnny bailey, several other men in the community, a good idea to involve these fathers in their community in trying to promote peace and they used to meet on picnic tables behind the community center, they would have barbecue and cut hair and talk to the men about being fathers, how to be better fathers, parts of their family. this group grew into a more formal structure with funding from the children's institute and it was really the work of a brilliant psychologist, a man named dr. herschel slinger who believe for too long we were talking about the problems in black and brown families and we needed to take a focus on the strengths in families of color and major strengthen their
