cherif kouachi, his brother said, and amedy coulibaly were all well known to french authorities.een in and out of prison. all three had once been under surveillance. criminologist xavier raufer has taught some of france's top cops, and is now learning from them how the system broke down in this case. all three of these men were very well-known to the police. how did this happen? >> xavier raufer: and not only were they known to the police on the terrorist side, because they had the terrorist past, but they were also known on the criminal side. those are not 100% pure terrorists. those are hybrids-- people who at the same time, are hardened criminals. so, why did that happen? is that the french legal system has a small box for a terrorist, has another small box for criminals, and if you are, at the same time, one and the other, you fall into the crack in the middle and you are lost. this is basically what happened. >> ward: is this the new face of terrorism, this hybrid between jihad and petty criminals? >> raufer: of course. those are the only ones that are left. you know, jihad

and in this case they determined that amedy coulibaly obtained 13 phone numbers and the investigationseemed like they were dedicated for use for these attacks. they had six text messages that were exchanged between coulibaly and sharif kouachi. and it appears they met the night before the "charlie hebdo" attack and exchanged a text message in the morning one hour before the attack. >> so obviously -- we had known the wives had exchanged some phone conversations, supposedly although there was a lot of suspicion their cell phones were being used by their respective husbands the kouachis and the coulibalys. but in any case it seems a lot more coordinated now not necessarily simply some sort of inspired lone wolf, right? >> no that's true. it looks much more coordinated, especially the fact that they would have met in person near kouachi's -- in the suburb that he lives in the night before the attack -- or actually a few hours -- 12 hours before the attack. so the fact that they would have actually met in person and then the next morning, one final exchange text message exchanged between

texts between amedy coulibaly and the kouachi brothers have been revealed. what do the texts show? all along, there were questions about how much coordination there was between the kouachi brothers and coulibaly who attacked the market. >> reporter: it shows closer coordination. they were accused of being involved in a previous plot together and an enormous amount of communication between their wives. the wife, boumeddiene. one of the wives of the brothers. and the years leading up. but in this case, you have text messages just in the hours leading up to these attacks. this is lamong, the french newspaper reporting. and based on the information in the cell phones, evidence that coulibaly met face to face in the very early morning hours before the attack with one of the kouachi brothers. that would suggest a level of coordination in terms of timing, target, et cetera, that we weren't aware of before. >> and la manz reporting the "charlie hebdo" attacks were on the verge of being cancelled. what's with that? >> reporter: it's one of the bizarre details. one of the kouachi brothers ha

you are getting reporting about amedy coulibaly and the reports that he filmed video of himself.the attack. what are you hearing? >> that's right. i have been briefed by a source who has been briefed by investigators who have watched this video. it's seven minutes long. it shows coulibaly storming into the supermarket and killing three of the shoppers there. but i'm told today it also shows that he had trouble reloading his machine gun. he was not able to reload his machine gun after that initial attack. also that he had poor weapons handling skills. the take away from investigators is he is unlikely to have received terror training in a camp overseas. >> what do you make of that that coulibaly was unable to reload his weapon? >> well wolf we have seen it. a weapon like that the ak-47, when you are under stress could easily cause someone to not be able to reload and recharge it and get are t readied to go. i believe that one we see this video -- i'm not sure the french are ever going to release this video. we will see other things on the other side that's not going to make things
