amelia draper is here now with a closer look at what aears to be a shifting tornado alley. amelia?when we talk about tornado alley it's whereou in ourry we have the most number of tornados. pically textbook tornado alley is right here, the areas dn through texas as we get cold dry air from canada we have warm hot y air from mexico and the moist warm air from the gulf. all those different air masses come together here in the middle part of the country and give the perfect set up for twisters. however we're starto see it shift to the east. we're seeing an orupward trend the areas in red. this is mainly the southeast up through icago. and this is for the number of ef-2 tornados or greater. we're not only seeing the shift to the east but the intense storms are more likely to developo e east of tornado alley here you see in tornado alley a downward trend of ef-4 tornados. this is what we call dixie alley meteorologists but could this be theew tornado alley as we see tornado develop in these regions? the ships about 140 miles off to the east. but why are we seeing the shift? the reason i

. >> amea draper here with a closer look at why. what's the word, amelia? >> as we continue to see warming temperatures we'll see more raid heavier rainfall events. we're not at the end of march yet and this is the wettest 12-month time period from an april to the end of march ever on record, guys. it's not just by a little bit. it's by an astounding 9 inches of water. putting thatn terms of snow, that would be almost 8 feet of snow. also looking at numbers, any 12 month period on record, shis is thond wettest. i have to say thank you to capital climate on twitter for ifying these numbers to me. this is in part to the increase and downpours as we see warmer temperatures overall, more rain in the atmosphere. so what you're noticing here i the downpours going from 1950 t. 20 i mean rainfall events of an inch or more. notice the trend line, it is going up and up, guys. >> wow. okay. >> after we spent a year where welmad raint every weekend. >> as we stay at storm team 4, the trend is your friend wedo t think that's changing any time soon. >> the grass and flow

got in alabama was about as bad as it gets elia draper is in the studio now with a closer look at the scope and strength of these deadly tornados. amelia? >> when you see the video coming out of the southeast, it is absolute unbelievable. catastrophic image, and it wasn't just in alabama yesterday. check it out. here are all the tornado reports, potential tornado reports yesterday from the gulf up through the carolinas over 40 reports yesterday. the national weather service is out surveying the damage but this is the area of interest hearing about the lee county tornado, it's right on the line inab a, next to georgia. you can see the long line. so the national weather service is determining how manyna ts this is and what strength. here's what we know, lee count hit with at least an ef-4 tornado, we could see this go up to an ef-5 winds estimated at 170 miles an hour, that means single family homes absolutely destroyed. and again, investigators are ill determining, do they need to bump this up maybe to an ef-5. so far we have ef-2 tornados reported in four states. to give you an idea when we talk about the enhanced scale and how measure
