here's meteorologist amelia segal. what do you say?> it's a tricky storm system to nail down how much rain and snow we'll see. what i can tell you for sure -- we are looking at rain or snow beginning tomorrow evening, later in the evening, and then continuing throughout the day on saturday. so dry conditions across the area all day today, and most of tomorrow. especially through the early evening as we get into the later evening hours between 7:00 and 10:00 p.m. this is when rain and maybe a little snow starts to push into the area. talking about not just one but two storm systems. the first storm system impacts us later tomorrow evening throughout the day on saturday. the second storm system is going to impact us very late sunday night, and then throughout the day on monday. temperatures right now are in the 30s and 40s. 39 in ghaithersberg. 36 ma nassies. 45 in washington. had 1 in fredericks and leesburg living the sunshine out there. partly to mostly sunny throughout the rest of the afternoon hours. highs in the low 40s to mid-40s.

but we start with our meteorologist, amelia segal in the weather center. how low are we going tonight? >> wendy, we're looking at temperatures tonight to be around 20 degrees, not as cold as last night. and actually overnight temperatures are going to kind of remain near steady maybe even slowly warm. i'll be showing that in just a moment. right now, we're at 34 24 degrees, the high temperature so far today. the wind chill 16 degrees outside, breezy conditions 5 to 10 miles per hour. so the wind chills across the area still in the single digits and teens. feeling about 8 in gaithersburg. and 13 for those of you in leesburg leesburg. 16 in manassas. feels-like temperature at 6:00 p.m. tonight, single digits and teens. notice overnight wind chill temperatures feel like they remain in the teens. so tomorrow morning, another cold start. at least it won't be as cold as it was this morning. nonetheless, the kids need to bundle up as they wait for the school bus or walk to school feeling 13 degrees in washington at 7:00 a.m. as we look forward to the weekend, one

. >> amelia segal is live in the 4 x 4 near hagarstown. >> reporter: we're making our way toward hagerstown right now on 70 west just passing the myersville middletow exit. we went over braddock mountain, one of the higher elevations just over 1,000 feet. and there was snow at that point. but now that we're at a lower elevation, more in the valley if you will just a very light rain. the road conditions are absolutely fine although the temperature is at 32 degrees. here in the storm team 4 x 4, driving this morning. we've seen about 10 salt trucks here on this road alone treating the roads in preparation for this evening commute like tom says. that is looking to be a little bit more messy than this morning commute. you can see here in the storm team 4 x 4 with our camera looking out, the roads here they're barely even wet at this point. we've hit a dry spot right now as we head toward hagerstown. we are tracking rain on radar right now on the storm team 4 x 4 weather app. so when we head there we'll bring you the conditions in hagerstown. for now, we'll send ove to melissa. >>> we're looking

amelia segal explains why so many are forming. it starts with normal traffic. >> then you get moisture that falls into the tracks. when you get temperatures overnight like we all can do in winter that drop below 32 degrees, that moisture freezes, and when water freezes it expand. >> reporter: as temperatures rise the ice melts and the pavement caves. why aren't they being filled? it come downs the resources and materials. road crews are gearing up for the winter weather so they can't be repairing the roads unless it's an extreme pothole. and harry says it's too cold for the plant that makes the stronger patches. >> when the plant opens we use a hot mix and that's a permanent patching of the pothole and more durable than the cold mix. >> reporter: for some we caught up with the pothole problem, well doesn't really pose a bother. >> i've had no problems at all and i drove in from new jersey. >> reporter: ahead at 6:00, a look at the prime pothole time. when you can expect it to be at its worst, plus we'll give you an idea as how cre

. >> storm team 4 meteorologist amelia segal is out in the elements. how is it looking now? >> reporter: doreen outside of hutchison elementary in herndon, virginia it's cold and slushing. no freezing occurring and of course the snow was heavy here around the early afternoon hours. for the most part, though temperatures here stayed right around or just above that freezing point so commuting around the area early this afternoon wasn't too big of an issue. you can see the temperature here outside of the school reporting a temperature of 35 degrees, most likely right around 33 to 35 at that point. and the students had school today, but all after-school activities were canceled. now, as we work our way into the evening and overnight hours, this storm is gone but the concern will be the re-freeze overnight. area roads here are just fine but it's the sidewalks that could be an issue. as you can see here, we're looking at these kind of slushy conditions. overnight, as temperatures drop to below freezing this will become a sheet of ice. so students walking to school tomorrow morning

let's go to storm team 4 meteorologist amelia segal in the weather center. >> good evening, guys. low temperatures will dip into the teens. today, everybody made it above freezing and not just above freezing. washington actually hit a high temperature of 41 degrees. right now, we're a good 15 degrees warmer than we were this time yesterday. so a lot of defrosting dethawing going on today. right now, the temperatures at 40 with beautiful blue skies. 6:00 most of us still above freezing at 34. but around 7:00 p.m. that's when we'll hit that freezing mark by 8:00 p.m. we're down to 30 degrees. so you do want to keep in miami-dade the refreeze that will be occurring overnight tonight. i know there could be slick spots, especially tomorrow morning on untreated sidewalks and driveways. overall, tomorrow noticeably cooler than today. i'll let you know just how cold it will be coming up in my full forecast, jim. >> amelia thanks. first at 4:00 now, we're getting our first look at how much of a toll this cold weather took on drivers all over our area. this afternoon, aaa tells us a record
