america foundation. i have known ron robinson for 35 years since we worked in campus politics to get there. have the greatest admiration for what they're doing with the ronald reagan ranch and programssponsoring throughout the year around the country. i hope you will stay very active with young america's foundation during the coming academic year. it is a real pleasure to be here. i thought since i am first time might begin by talking about why this panel is being held and why it is important to read books. they say reading books is somewhat of a dying art with all the competing opportunities we have in our time but i think young america's foundation recognizes the importance of a cannon of literature. about america's founding ideas. limited government and the free enterprise system by chairing this panel. by reading books we really get -- we develop a philosophical framework, those first principles that enable us to evaluate public policy and make judgments about ideas that come along. if we familiarize ourselves with the ideas of jefferson and madison and great economists like milton friedman and others, when we come across ideas that challenge us we can think about what it is tho
