sometimes has transformed japanese-american and chinese-americans and americans and mexican-americans and puerto ricans. they transform, groomed these folks into insiders of a sort. so, for example, one 1940, war department memo regarding who could join white units, white military units held that, quote, trainees of all races other than -- will be assigned and the same as white trainees, end of quote. right. so here's example of this kind of what i'm calling this white black line, but which in effect was a white everyone else line. and this was by far the most institutionalized, the most expansive, the most, you know, debilitating and destructive of the military's many color lines. so that was the first one. the second important line is apparent. maybe this quote that i just mentioned. right? so take the note. take note of the language some of those quote races, other than --, end of quote. we're not exactly white but would be assigned to as if they were white. here, then, is a sign that the military established other color lines besides the black white one. the most important of thes

my new book that just came out last month, it's called half american the epic story of african-americans fighting water to at home and abroad. i'd like to start with what led me to the project. so my last book project was african-american newspapers, so i was going through historic newspapers like the chicago defender, pittsburgh courier and. one thing that struck me is when you look at the papers from the war years, you come across images like these this is from the minneapolis spokesman, which is the largest and longest running black in minnesota, where i'm from. these pictures are the kind of things i'd never really seen before. i'm a historian of taught history of over to african history more than a decade. but these kind of everyday photos of the black men and women, more than a million who volunteered were drafted. the military seeing these everyday average photos. it really blew me away. it made me curious because i came across first dozens of these and eventually hundreds. i started to wonder what more could be there? what more do we know about the black perspective on world war

american? all right who can claim to be an american? that's one of the big questions that's going to kind of? take us through the end of our semester into as we deal with the 19th century. so in upcoming weeks we're going to talk about, you know, immigrants. we're going to talk about kind of the progressive error and things like that. i think this is a good start point. to think about who is claiming american status. and what does that mean? so we're going to build from some of the ideas. we talked about with manifest destiny. from the discussion of political violence and build into these are other things. couple key concepts that we need to deal with first of all a settler colonialism. have you heard that phrase before? i see a couple yeses and a couple knows some heads kind of bobbing every which way, okay when we talk about settler colonialism, let me give you kind of a general definition here. we're talking about colonialism that seeks to replace. the original population colonialism that se
