americans. this exhibit explores the nature of the american people's relation with american indians, and it's based on premise that most american people, that they have nothing to do with american indians, and that american indians have nothing to do them. and we are arguing that the exact opposite is true. we're arguing that americans and american indians share a deeply history that this the history that shaped the united states of the americas and, that it has had a profound, lasting impact on americans national consciousness and their popular culture. so we're standing in the central, which we call indians everywhere here. and as you can see, this gallery with images of american indians. these are images that at the american have made of american indians. and this imagery pervasive in americans lives. it is so pervasive, in fact, that we call it the white of american lives. most american people aren't even conscious that. everywhere you look in american, you will find imagery of american indi

today this sculpture is part of a series of productions by euro-americans that depict native american culture as tired, exhausted, literally at the end of the trail. toward the end of their natural existence. this is part of representative native american groups as being part of the past not part of the present and certainly not part of the future. let's think of the implications of this kind of representation. here i i want to quote jeffrey gibson who is a native american artist. one of a group of native american artists that the intellectual's invited to comment on artworks at the metropolitan museum ofm art he discusses what it felt like to see this representative of native americans as a child. he says at the time i saw as an image ashamed defeated indian and iis wondered let's think abt this for a moment let's think about who these representations on the groups that are purportedly being represented, what' does it mean to be told yu don't exist or you are almost extinct? he goes on to discuss these kind of representations have been reclaimed by native american groups as a symbol

a broader american culture. is w a deliberate choice on my part what i can contribute is a critique of various representations off formulas. i cannot and never claim to speak for it cherokee history in this kind of a monolithic way. cherokee people do not need me to tell them what their history is. the knowledge is there. the other thing i would add western carolina has responded partly to the colonial history of higher education has been as much as possible at thed programming and our initiatives towards a series of strategic partnerships focus on things like cherokee language, native american health. we really define is honoring a set of obligations between the university and in a sense the state of because we are state school university occupies the cherokee place in the eastern bandri as a sovereign native american nation. it is always an issue it should be an issue. i simply speak for cherokee history because i don't. and i don't claim to be. >> real quick, what do you think based upon your study of this su

more in keeping with american pragmatism, partly as a response to such critiques, the american colleges slowly altered their curricula over granting more pedagogical attention to other subjects. the resistance to the classical curriculum came to a head in the decades following the civil war. by this time, a generation of academic took their pedagogical bearings from the german research universities. the spirit of professionalization had first reared its head at these institutions, which encouraged rigorous training in particular disciplines and led the attainment of a ph.d. in the late 19th century. numerous academic leaders in america reoriented higher education towards the spirit of professionalization. typical of german institutions. of higher learning. they aimed to reduce the influence of the classical humanities. the american colleges creating institutions in which the scientific method would dominate. importantly, these reformers, the prescribed classical with the elective. undergraduates were now free to choose virtually all their own classes. by the closing years of the 19th ce

to american communication the. section 702 authorizes warrantless surveillance and can only be targeted at foreigners abroad. but the surveillance sweeps in americans communications because americans communicate with foreigners. it's the government intent to spy on those americans it would have to get a warrant in a criminal investigation or a fisa title i order in a foreign intelligence investigation. so to prevent the government from using section 702 as an end run around these statutory requirements, congress required the government to minimize the retention and use of americans' information and required the government to certify it is not using section 702 as a back door to spy on americans. these protections are proven meaningless. all the agencies that receive data conduct warrantless electronic searches for the purpose of retrieving american phone calls, emails and text messages. the f.b.i. conducted 2,000 of these back-door searches in 2022 alone. this number is it is a domestic spying tool one that allows
