joining us now is don carty, he's the former ceo of american airlines of course parent amr corporationere used as missiles. so much has changed, but give me your reflections 20 years later when you think about both that day and obviously the changes that have taken place so significantly in the industry of which you were an important part. >> well, thanks, david, and it's great to be on the show, and it's good to be part of this remembrance of what was a really somber and difficult time for all of us as americans for those of us at american lines, it was really personal. we lost some really wonderful teammates as part of this terrible event, and my day started, actually, that morning when one of our flight attendants, betty hong who died on flight 11 called our ops center and our operations center immediately called me, so this was probably about 8:30 in the morning. the hijacking was already underway, and i was informed that we believed there was a hijacking underway of course we have a protocol for those kinds of calls to make sure that they're real and i asked the team whether they'

the oldest passenger was robert norton, an american airlines flight 11. he was 82.e some 2000 children who lost a parent. 146 lost a parent at the pentagon. nancy from altoona, pennsylvania. caller: good morning. thanks for taking my call. i was working at a local hospital. i can remember that there was such disbelief that is happened. what could it be? the feeling that started to spread word-of-mouth. the tv was on whether patients gather on our floor. somewhere watching it. what could this be? the feeling was disbelief at first. could it be an accident? it is something we have never experienced. the tv was on and things were developing. then the disbelief turned to the second attack knowing it was an attack. how could this happen was the feeling. these are the feelings that everybody experienced in different ways. some people started crying and some people just stared like, what is going to happen next? it put a heavy heart into that whole day. how could this have happened stop helplessness for america. how we are experiencing such a thing that sort of woke us up
