american-style. and we are excited to have with us kate aronoff to discuss how capitalism and neoliberalism hadap filled the working class. with the current the surgeons in the united states as exemplified by the growing membership of democratic the democratic socialists of america and the popularity of politicians like bernie sanders to explore how this energy might be channeled to achieve a future that is more democratic and environmentally sustainable. let me introduce our guest tonight journalist kate aronoff writing has appeared in the guardian. and the new york times. and she is a co- editor of wii on the future democratic socialism. together with peter dreier. and she lives in brooklyn. the author of the new york times bestseller invisible man that got the whole world watching. and a fellow at the nation institute. he has written for the new york times t the atlantic complex. the new republic and the ewguardian. and he has been a featured commentator. he also lives in brooklyn and so now let me handle this and hand over the mic to our guest and i wanted to just say after the discussion there will

we have to take seriously the problems because american capitalism -- capitalism generally and american capitalism especially runs on optimism. you start business because it's a reliable sense it would pay off and a future utility koles from the investment and risk. i you start to believe it won't, why move? why risk college? why start a new business? if you cease to believe there's this better future, so actually the real enemy i think of capitalism is not socialism. it's pessimism. and so that's the reason i think we can try to find a more reasonable consensus. everything is not right. we have to disagree about the role of government and fixing it, but nor are we going to hell in a hand cart, because if you believe that, you're indeed in the hand cart. >> i think time for one more quick question. right here in the middle. >> glad i got the other one. it's hard not to comment a little bit. michael, sounds like mark anderson, world impact news and an independent journalist, sounds look you're defending the status quo at all costs and a real other quick comment is all taxes make prices g

but most of the investing capital that buys the tools you use comes from your fellow americans. 40 >>oney in the bank's 70 million of us own insurance policies. over 15 million of us invest savings and corporation stocks and bonds, which helps to finance industries. each year the people of america invests billions of dollars to create new plans and equipment. this invested capital buys the tools which make a man's labor worth more because he produces more. in china, for example, whether there is practically no capital available for investment in tools, a man's labor is not worth very much. it takes 10 days to move 10 gallons of kerosene 100 miles. an american railroad worker takes only two hours to move 100,000 gallons of kerosene one hedger miles at a free cost of one cent a gallon. but coolly makes $.10 a day. an average american where a walled worker makes $10 a day, or 100 times more than a coolly. the average railroad worker has the benefit of a $20,000 investment in equipment. the chinese coolies and equipment is worth only $.10. with improvement inexpensive tools, and the skill

. >> why it is concerning to me it is a confliction you need to value like american capitalism. but this idea that your personal worth is directly correlated to your economic output or contribution and value in the marketplace. and that there is something morally superior of engineers having a certain mindset or value system. and it resonates. i guess it leads to our hierarchy but also leads to the mindset that is very optimized to the bottom line. is not the humane approach. >> and that and the ceo challenging and interesting. with those issues for our leaders here. at least at the time was he an avatar for problems in leadership and tech and how do you perceive that? >> so that second company i was 24 when i joined and then 25. i think it's incredibly hard thing to do to run a company if you have dependents or whatever. i do not any new one - - envy anyone in that position. and those that are growing up at the same time that they are learning how to be a ceo. and the reason i don't name companies or executives is that i feel that behavior institutionally was the structural pos

bed with anyone that could that it was just open for business with the worst of the worst of american capitalism. jeffrey epstein is the kind of example of that. they obviously kind of lied to everyone saying he was a billionaire and a wonderful financier. by 2012, 2013 after he'd been convicted of sex crimes, people realized he was kind of full of it and he was morally reprehensible. they finally washed their hands of him into the end of 2012 and 2013 epstein who at this point had a lot of money and they were trying to keep up a faÇade as an international businessman that didn't have anywhere to go and he probably would have had to shut down his dirty little operation were it not for this attending 15 and decided even when any other bank had cut him off in the financial system and was willing to get in bed with him and the things you will not be surprised to hear was deutsche bank. they continued up until the time of his arrest and that was after multiple and for us using the dn elsewhere in the bank raised concerns probably about the ethics and morality but was well known for having done a lot

people losing their land as an essential element of how capitalism develops and grows and what is essential to it. i could have written a book about american indians were about the greatest dispossession in the history of north america. i went looking for a story people don't often think about an hour considered to think about capitalism and something i myself did not understand there were the southern mountains and a complicated story about how the white settler. it's considered heroic and lost its land, so i set out to write a painted case study and it took over my life as i dedicated years to try to understand it as very much an outsider. my book is about capitalism. i am an environmental historian at the political economy, so i was putting those two things together and so i hope you like the results. [applause] ibook was born out of kindness. there's one that shall remain nameless, this was a lovely man who came to me about two years after the book was out and he set up a little bookstore if somebody sums it up in the radio the triumph of the human spirit so he came to me and said he can you do for foster parents with u2 for bookstores

this conflation of your-- that i think is, it's not specific unique to the valley, it's like american capitalism, but feels amplified in the valley, this idea that your personal worth is directly correlated to your economic output or your economic contribution and your economic value, whatever your value in the marketplace and that there's something morally superior, in fact, about being an engineer, having a certain-- what is assumed to be a certain mindset or a certain value system and that has a sort of weird-- it resonates in different ways. i guess it's this sort of like-- it leads to a certain hierarchy in certain companies, but it also leads to a mindset that is very oriented toward optimizing toward the bottom line or something, that has-- it's just not like a humane approach to life or to the leadership or to organization. so, anyway, chatting away with the microphone. [laughter] >> i think the leadership thing is -- so, okay. so we get past your start-up. we go to your next start-up, and all sort of-- reference, but not exactly-- you get to the second ceo who is challenging or interest
