guest: just above 40 million americans. cities are diverse and dynamic. there are all kinds of people that live in city. growth has slowed. when we talk about the kinds of cities that are growing and declining, it speaks to the larger issues and larger trends in american population. host: the city loses and gains people -- does that affect how the city functions? guest: it does. cities grown when they have more births and deaths and one people move in and out. they also grow through immigration and throughout miscible annexation, -- it is a bowl and exception -- municipal annexation. raw data.k about the broad da guest: cities are very diverse. cities are on the rise. a great story to tell about american cities and the recovery of the american cities over the last 30 or so years. there was a sense following world war ii that cities would be hollowed out and that they would never come back. cities are doing pretty well. it is not an even playing field. cities are proving to be attracted to well educated people. they are driving innovation. they remain the h

city's markets. so the argument becomes, you cannot understand the history of chicago nor can you understand the history of the american middle west or west without seeing city and country as transforming each other. and it's part of this kind of an argument that mark is offering which is, when you put seemingly human thing, eve an city in a larger natural frame, you understand things about that city you never would have noticed if you didn't put them in that larger context. that's what that book tries to dos. although it does it for chicago, there's another sense in which the arguments of that book apply to every city on the planet throughout human history. so if you read it in my view you'll look at any human community differently, because you'll be asked to look beyond the boundaries of that community towards the sunt side in which that community exists. >> i would say one of the things bill's book captures a breaking down this idea of separations nap there's the city and there's the country. i think it's influenced a lot of people in how they think about all kinds of things, questioning the categories that we creat

then you have 200,000 irish immigrants, a quarter of the city's population, 13,000 african-americans and these two groups are competing at the bottom of new york society for the poorest housing, lowest paying jobs and there is tremendous friction in many parts of the city economy between them. this is a view that is germane to where we are today. little a view of the five points neighborhood ten blocks from where we are now. to the lower east side, first getting off the ships, crammed into these old colonial era would frame houses by the mid-19th century. it is lopsided and family after family is crammed into these things. what you do have next to it is these new tenement houses which the next generations of immigrants will occupy. you have at the bottom of new york city society racism, irish catholics feeling discriminated agnst by white anglo-saxon protestants, the irish becoming democrats and racial friction between these two groups at the bottom of the hierarchy's. at the beginning of the work as i said newar as i said new yorkers volunteered by the thousands and they had a strong
