principal at live oak high school in morgan hill banned students from wearing shirts with the american flagcinco de mayo because the principals felt the students were motivated not only by their american pride but incident with the mexican flag the year before which sparked several fights. students who did wear the shirts with the american flag were asked to turn their shirts inside out, then they refused they were sent home. as a result, families filed a free speech lawsuit which has been dismissed in lower courts. this is the majority decision in part reading "it was reasonable for school officials to proceed as though the threat of a potentially violent disturbance was real." one of the judges who had the countering opinion said that it is not fair to ban speech because of how it might be perceived by others. the supreme court of the united states may take up the issue, they may make that announcement on whether or not they'll take up the issue as early as today, but so far, they have really stayed out of the fray when it comes to free speech and school districts. mostly up to this point

caroline benning, the daughter of henry lewis benning, for whom the fort was named, raised the first american flag over the camp. they knew 85 acres of land was not going to be enough for training modern infantry soldiers. they talked with a local businessman who owned a lot of land around here and he agreed to sell it to the army and we eventually moved out here in 1919. in world war i, the infantry played a key role on the battlefield for all those participating in the war. it was determined that had we had better training, we would have lost fewer soldiers. when fort benning started, the war had not ended yet. but just about a month later, on the 11th month, the 11th hour , and 11th day of 1918, the war came to a close and there was talk of closing fort benning. many officers who had served in the american expeditionary forces to france went before congress to testify that had our soldiers had better training they would not have suffered the casualties they did in just 210 days of actual combat. they suffered 53,500 killed outright on the battlefield. 300,000 wounded or gassed. for just 210 day
