the other one was american heritage magazine, you remember when american heritage was the hardcover back in the 50s and 60s? it came in a box, delivered, and it was a great magazine, bruce catton was the editor in charge, and that, when it came, it was a big day in my house. my father was the type of guy who would not let you have something until he had read the whole thing first. okay, so i would patiently wait for my father to read the whole thing, then i would get american heritage magazine. my father did the grocery shopping, because he was cheap, this explains why i weighed 128 pounds when i graduated from high school. but, my father would deliver in the city, and there was only one grocery store, the a and p, the atlantic and pacific tea company. okay, they had a thing going there once, he came in and if you bought $20 worth of groceries, you get a free book. and the free book was american heritage volume 8, the civil war. $20 is a lot of groceries back then. okay, but my father bought $20 worth of groceries because he wanted to give me this book and this is the book, i've got it w

i begin my director's report, i'd like to take a moment to recognize that november is native american heritage month. this past wednesday, november first, mayor london breed hosted a celebration in partnership with the american indian cultural center in city hall, where four bay area native american community leaders were honored. so there is that. and then to start off this month's report, i'd like to share a few highlights from this past month. so from october 5th through october eighth, i attended the western museums association conference in pasadena, california, where i presented on a panel on monumental reckoning and shared insights about our work with our monuments and memorials, advisory committee and plans for our upcoming work with pulse check from october 12th to the 13th. i was in new york city, where i attended a race forward board meeting on october 12th. americans for the arts released their findings from the arts and economic prosperity six survey agency staff are reviewing the results and we hope to be able to share an overview and summary of our local findings with you soon o
