thank you for your service to the american legion auxiliary. p that i know the legion depends on a lot. secretary, thank you for your leadership over the last two and a half years. it has been an honor to work with you. it's an honor to call you a friend. i am honored to be here amongst you for the 93rd annual convention of the american legion. i appreciate the invitation. thank you very much for the warm welcome this morning. two weeks ago, two days after one of our chinook helicopters had been shot down in afghanistan, i stood on the tarmac at the airforce base in afghanistan for a battlefield memorial. i witnessed what is perhaps one of the most solemn ceremonies in the military. it was a ramp ceremony. 40 souls were honored that night, all died fighting a hero's fight. i stood shoulder to shoulder with members of our armed forces to pay our final respects to the shoulders, the navy seals, and the airman -- to our soldiers, the navy seals, and the hairmen. we stood united in our grief, our pain, and our anger over loss oforrific life. i refle

the chamber cannot do this without the help of organizations just like the american legion that have a grass-roots infrastructure to marry up with what the local chambers of commerce are trying to do across the country. i am confident we can go from 100 to 300 or 400 or 500 hiring fairs in local communities, in suburban cities, with the help of men and women like you, because you understand the sacrifices the young men women have made and you have done it yourself. imagine if you took a map of every legion posts across the country and overlaid it with the map budget showed you. imagine the potential of what we can do and the movement we can create together by just taking a local chamber and a legion post and just saying let's just throw a lunch, five or six employers with jobs for veterans, and we will get 20 or 30 veterans in that small community and bring them together for a couple of hours to talk about job opportunities. we started with a pilot program in new jersey in the ocean and burlington county to do hiring fairs in october and november. is there going to be as much fanfare

in a speech that bill simon just gave at the american legion at the end of august, we doubled that to $20 million. and it's important because the philanthropic piece with the corporate piece is something that goes hand in hand. and specifically, there's a great program that some of you may know that is led by c. recuse university and it's called entrepreneurship boot camp for veterans with disabilities. and there's a companion effort that deals with families, represents a consortium of universities that are devoted to make entrepreneurs out of veterans with disabilities and their families, and to make them successful. if you don't know much about it, i would encourage you to learn about it. it provides some of the flexibility that we think this population needs to not have necessary the typical career with wal-mart or with anybody else, but that would want to start and own their own business. i heard some discussion about my good friend, barbara, and given an hour this morning, the work she's doing is very important and very important to us as we go forward with our work in this space
