in 1980 the american psychiatric association officially designated it that. but in the early days, because the evidence of post traumatic stress disorder comes from an individual report, people were skeptical about the reliability of its, thought this was a way of soldiers found to avoid going back to the front. they called this bad behavior and as "the new york times", which by the way seems to be calling our programs each time, last time they did pain, now they are dos post traumatic stress disorder, they must be watching what is happening on charlie rose. >> rose: they could do worse. >> they could do a lot worse. (laughter) >> so they pointed out that veterans from the vietnam war suffer a double hurt. first of all they have the disease, the post traumatic stress disorder but in addition because many of them were thought to be malingerers, bad behavior they did not get an honorable discharge. this is no longer the case. this is now considered a legitimate category and people who suffer from it are treated appropriately. and one of the reasons it is a legi

the american psychiatric association has been very clear on what it thinks of that kind of treatment, i'll go on to quote in the last four decades reparative therapists have not produced rigorous scientific research to substantiate their claims of cure. and the potential risks of reparative therapy are great, including depression, anxiety, and self-destructive behavior. end quote. defense attorney joey jackson is live in atlanta to explain why a judge would do this. joey, explain, why would a judge do this? >> explain away. first of all we have to understand this is an injunction. what is an injunction mean? it means we're going to slow down and there's going to be a hearing but pending that hearing the law will not go into effect. now get this, ashleigh, with regard to the law not going into effect, it won't go into effect for the three plaintiffs. everyone else, of course, will not be subject to this ruling because the judge limited that ruling to these three. so in essence, the judge said, right now, when you have an injunction it means there's a likelihood of success on the merits

. >>> now the american psychiatric association says it is okay to give antidepressants to people who grieving over a recently lost loved one. again, these people are not diagnosed with clinical depression. these are people who have suffered a real loss. can a pill really help you with that? here now is beverly hills psychiatrist dr. carol lieberman. is this a good idea? >> thank you. the whole mental health system is actually falling apart and it goes beyond bereavement and depression. actually, bereavement has a lot of similarities to major depression or at least in some people's cases. the depression comes from loss. so whether it's the loss of a job or a loss of a relationship or a loss of a loved one there really are similar symptoms like a sense of sadness like loss of interest or pleasure in activities that you were involved with before, sleeping changes, eating changes. >> i always thought antidepressants were for people who felt like that all of the time regardless of what was happening in their life. >> no, major depression is usually thought of as people who have's genetic

the american psychiatric association updating their manual for the first time in 20 years.inge eating and hoarding, and gender identity order has been removed. and we have a faculty member from new york university school of medicine and contributeor, so, why the changes now? what are the implications? >> it is important for both doctors, patients and insurers, very really important. we are trying to get it right. each 10 or 15 years they look at psychiatric diagnosis which can't be made on a blood test. it is not like your cholesterol. and we want to fine tune it so appropriately treat patient whose need it and make sure they are ensured for the condition and remove a diagnosis that should be part of a larger category. that is what we are seeing. >>gregg: what do youthe new cha? >> you have the leading psychiatrists who have no vested interests other than to get it right. so they are looking at this and they are saying well we know people have aspergers and it should be part of autistic spectrum disorder. they know that dyslexia should be part of general learning, and gende

diagnoses, but in the upcoming revision to the diagnostic and statistical manual, the american psychiatric associationthe plan is to roll them all into one. part of the reason for that is even though autism is a speck -- as a spectrum is very diverse, people have started to realize that which of these three you get depend on a lot of things that do not actually have to do with you as a person. it depends on what dr. you went to or what age you went to the doctor or where that doctor receives their training or any number of things that are not specifically related to actual differences between these diagnoses. we want to be very careful that this new, unified definition of autism does not leave anyone out. when you go from three diagnostic criteria -- three sets of diagnostic criteria to one, you have to ensure that that remaining one is sufficiently broad and can capture people who, for example, struggle with speech and those who do not, can capture people who have talked in impairment and those that do not -- who have cognitive impairment and those that do not. we're also starting to recognize that w

the american psychiatric association concluded this year and i will quote, targeted efforts must be made to encourage medical training and residency in the sub specialties of child and adolescent psychiatry. i gather my time is very brief, so i am going to yield to senator reed very shortly, but i do want to thank senator casey and senator isakson for their patience and their hard work. the amendment that i have proposed and that senator reed of rhode island has proposed is an amendment that does not add any additional spending. it stays within the existing budgetary limits. it confines the amount available for child and adolescent psychiatry to less than 1% of the total. and i believe it is a very sensible measure, particularly in the wake of the tragedy in newtown, connecticut. the idea that there is not room for further attention to child, mental health and psychiatry and adolescent mental health and psychiatry seems to me to be an unfortunate outcome. bradley hospital in rhode island would be a beneficiary of this. they are a particularly good hospital in a great number of settings.
