appears to be that in the big picture of this, meghan is to blame for this secession from the royal family. americaning sexism and racism in that. having just had a recent awakening on these issues here in america, does the royal family understand that? in their calculations, and their view of what's going on? >> i think that's something that meghan struggled with during her time as a working member of the royal family. was dealing with issues of racism, particularly in the british press, and having an institution that wanted to maintain relationships with those media organizations, and not defend meghan. you have to remember, when we had resurgence of the black lives matter movement last year the house of windsor was silent. no support. the only people that were talking is harry and meghan over in the u.s. is shows where things are at. and going back to bullying accusations. it's hard to not see a pattern where women and women of color in the workplace are often accused that men and white individuals are not. it's something we've seen seriously being problematic in the past, and meghan is clearly a

that they've given to the media for months that they never really accepted a biracial american marrying a british royal family. sometimes you felt that the nature of the briefings and the media, they wouldn't be happy until they broke it up. so i understand why meghan and harry had to leave. >> do you think this moment of reckoning in terms of systemic racism will have a lasting impact in the u.k., indeed, across the commonwealth? >> i hope so, and i think that the royal family and commonwealth will survive as long as the queen is alive, because she's hugely respected. once she passes away, which must happen one day, i think the whole question of the royal family, prince charles is going to stay will be up to debate. the way they treated meghan markle will not be an argument for the status quo among the british people or members of the commonwealth. >> so as you've just been hearing, the fallout from the interview has left black brittains feeling disenchanted. ♪ ♪ >> reporter: it was the moment that gave hope to black britts. >> it felt like everything had changed, you know? >> reporter: karen gibson w

it seems like americans who generally have no interest in the royals, and certainly there is an american involved in this here, but why do you think there is so much interest in this moment involving the royal family? >> i actually think that prince harry said it very well during the interview that both the royal family, again, as an institution, and meghan markle and harry, it's not so much about them, but it's about what they represent about where we are on race relations. again, remember how meghan markle's engagement and then subsequent marriage into the royal family, there were op-eds and commentary penned about how this was going to modernize them, how this was going to bring them into the 21st century, right? so i think the reason why this moment is so emotionally packed for so many people here in america is that we are also having our reckonings with institutions, especially black women, who find ourselves in institutions that do not support us, do not protect us, even driving us to places where our mental health is compromised, where our children aren't safe. i think that's why
