it did affect americans when they saw this. more americans became hopefully. you have the recession which is making us slightly fearful and then you see someone who made it from a beginning and then there is hope as well. >> does the american dream differ by race? >> it is amazing how similar it is. i would say virtually, no. one's children, one's ability to have a home, one's ability to have the children in school, the attitudes are similar. minorities are more hopeful. you need the dream more and it is more powerful for people who have a ways to go in terms of mobility. the actual opportunity to realize the dream does vary by race. one of the authors looks at s segerating and my race, sometimes minorities believe it in stronger but on the progress toward it they have lower progress. >> what about by gender? >> i was hoping you would ask that because my chapter is on gender. the similarity and what is so resilient about this dream is there is a commonality against american americans and it binds us together in a way that some cultures don't have this glue. me

the african-american community a separate history from white americans in north america. that had a particular history. much of it is subordination that within that subordination has created a community of culture that are worth preserving as opposed to the deep integration assumption is criticized by the black nationalist of 1960s and 1970s are basically imagines the black community should cease to exist once integrationist and succeed, but there will be a kindness painless genocide is african-americans are integrated into mainstream majority white institutions. so that is the thesis in a nutshell. the good and well-intentioned people in the 1960s and 1970s embraced racial justice that limited the amount that would need to be reformed in american society. for example in legal education s.a.t. schmidts university virginia school of law come a segregated institution by law until the late 1960s was part of the never say die persistence of the state of virginia. when i got there in the early 80s the school had been integrated at least there is no racial exclusion. integratio

it's time to realize that all too many americans, hardworking americans are falling behind. from 1979 to 2007, wages for the top 1% grew 156%. while the bottom 90% of us saw our wages grow only 17%. since 1983, 75% of the growth in wealth has been captured by the top 5% while the bottom 60% actually suffered a net decline. by 2010, nearly all low-income families have made the same hourly wage they did in 2000 despite having raised productivity during that time period by 22%. that's not how it's supposed to work. median family income was 6% lower, but this loss decade caps a trend that has been going on in this country for over 30 years. and what is the most telling portrait of low and middle-income americans are being shut out, bloomberg recently reported that 95% of wealth generated since the great recession went to the richest 1%, 95% went to 1%. in real terms, nine out of 10 people control less wealth than they did before the crash. in 2012, the top 10% of earners took home more than half of the u.s. total income. this is the highest level ever recorded. income and wealth
