had a ferry that crossed from here in downtown lynchburg over into what is now madison heights and amherst county. so because of the river, lynchburg's history really begins with transportation. behind me here we have some of the early examples of the boats that were on the river. with the creation of the canal in the 1830's. the canal came to lynchburg in 1836. this is a model of the type of boat that would have been on the river, it's called a battoe boat. further on on the other side of the case is a pact boat which was designed to carry people. this one carried car gow and the pact boat carried people. one of the most important crops in lynchburg that these boats were carrying was tobacco. by 1840, when lynchburg was barely 70 years old, there were already 40 tobacco warehouses in the city, less than 500 people but 40 tobacco warehouses. this is one of the main crops and economic drives for the city. now, lynchburg is known as the hill city. it's really hilly here. so moving tobacco was rather difficult. and the way that they did it was in these really large barrels known as hogshead.
