what was the amtrak personnel's reaction to the scene?> i really don't know because after the impact, and it was a tremendous impact, the train was going very fast at the time. and it was so -- it was so strong and so sudden. when i was thrown, fortunately, as i said, pete sessions and another nice lady came to check on me right away. but, i would say the e.m.s. came through and did a very good job checking on everyone. there are house doctors with us on this trip. as you know, there are doctors who actually can treat us in the house. most of them, i believe, are navy doctors and they are very skilled as well. so the response was, under the circumstances, i think very good. there is another gentleman being wheeled out from our van damage point on a -- vantagm the stretcher as well. i don't know if they are coming from the train or outside of the i do see some of my friends members of mine actually walking outside the train now. sap san congressman, can you give us an idea of how many people you think are on the train? we had pete sessions

what happened today, the capitol police, the amtrak personnel quickly responding, people steig in their seats, a callout for doctors, not just members, but you have spouses of members. you have people who if they've seen an injury to the left, even if you're not exchange of rendering first aid, you help until support gets there. seemed like we had a helicopter over our train in about 20 seconds. i'm not even exaggerating. it was really quick. and the part of the goal is rendering first aid who whoever needs it, but police doing their job, just like they did on the softball field. they can't assume that this is just an accident and it's only one vehicle. they put their procedures in place to secure the train. and local law enforcement shows up to help with that, but the professionalism and quick response for something that's totally unexpected, just like the softball field in a completely different situation. and the capital police are ready for any. >> reporter:. it's amazing what they do. >> lee zeldin of new york, good to know you're okay. good to hear your voice. >> take care, good t

amazing watching how the first responders reacted to it, whether it's the capitol police, the amtrak personnel, the local firefighters, the local police officers. the main concern would be to render first aid to make sure that anyone who's in need of a doctor or other help can get it. also, there's an important process to make sure that this was a random accident. when you first hit a truck, you see the capitol police officers and others secure the train. i haven't heard, you know, of anyone after the first few minutes expressing that concern, but seeing how quickly they reacted was impressive. there was immediately a helicopter above within about, gosh, it might have been 20 seconds and there was a helicopter above our train. >> was that an initial thought, in the moments after the crash, after the impact, did that go through your mind that maybe this isn't an accident? >> well, it actually went through my mind quickly because it was expressed very quickly on our car. you know, we have -- right now i'm looking out the window. we have a local police officer with an m-4 just patrolling right ou

amtrak personnel standing and it almost knocked her to the ground. i was worried about her.hen the next thing i realized we were slowing down significantly and coming to a stop. and that's when we all knew we hit something. of course we didn't know immediately what we had hit. people that were closest to the actual place on the track where it actually occurred realized that it was a garbage truck and that there were people in the cab of that truck. we have physicians as members of congress who got off the train pretty quickly to get to that truck to try to help the people in the truck. we did have some emergency first responders from the come as well. obviously we have one fatality which is a tragedy. we have another very seriously injured person in that truck and third person injured but we don't know how much. we do have a couple of people on the train who were taken off the train mainly for precautionary measures. one of them probably had a concussion. they want to take him in to town, make sure that he gets the attention he gets so that it's not some ramification from th
