and i had never heard of cher ami.if i had a dollar for every time i said that -- it was a line about an old guy sitting on the park bench surrounded by pigeons and it said it is no cher ami story. i was struck in the story and to go to your question for me i think what i do as being a fiction writer don't have to assemble the whole glass window but fixated on a couple of pieces and their relationship so that's what i did. once you look up cher ami you can hear about her without hearing about wit. it's almost like the matching process where we'll find the object of my fascination and adoration and drop attend their anunoby in like they are cher ami and i want to talk about her and they'll start walking the perimeter and drop a pin and start from there. >> kathleen is a follow-up to that i know it's a work of fiction if i understand but this novel is really based on two bona fide soldier and pigeon. how did you decide to write about real people and what was that process like to fictionalize the story? >> that's a great
