i'm amy goodman. in highland park, illinois, the death toll in monday's mass shooting at the city's july 4 parade has risen to seven. the dead include a married couple, irina and kevin mccarthy, who attended the parade with their two year-old son aiden who was found wandering alone after the shooting. the boy's father died as he tried to protect his son from the rooftop sniper who fired 70 rounds at parade-goers. nine shooting victims remain hospitalized. on tuesday, authorities filed seven counts of first degree murder against the suspected gunman, a 21-year-old resident of highland park named robert crimo. police also acknowledged they visited the man's house twice in 2019, first after he tried to -- his family said he tried to take his own life by suicide and then when he threatened to "kill everyone." this is chris covelli, a spokesperson for the lake county's sheriff's office. >> the police removed 16 knives come a dagger, and a sword from crimo's home. at that time there was no probable cause to

i'm amy goodman. president biden is urging the senate to swiftly pass the inflation reduction act of 2022 after west virginia senator joe manchin's a surprise announcement that he would support a budget reconciliation package to combat the climate crisis while lowering health care costs. the legislation represents just a fraction of the more than $3 trillion sought by progressive democrats in 2020. biden said thursday the deal would still be the most important climate legislation ever passed by congress payment pres. biden: this bill is far from perfect, it's a compromise. that is often how progress is made, by compromise. this bill would be the most significant legislation in history to tackle the climate crisis and improve our energy security right away. amy: the package includes nearly $370 billion in new spending on climate and energy over the next 10 years, but environmentalist morning it contains poison pills for the in -- environment, like the interior opening up millions of land to elements. t

i'm amy goodman. as the war in ukraine enters its sixth month, russia and ukraine signed deals on friday to reopen ukrainian ports on the black sea in an effort to increase grain exports. the deals were brokered by the united nations and turkey. u.n. secretary general antonio guterres praised the development. >> and let there be no doubt, this is an agreement for the world. it will bring relief for developing countries on the edge of bankruptcy and the most vulnerable people on the edge of famine. amy: on saturday, just a day after the deal was reached, russia attacked the black sea port of odesa. ukraine said the missile attack damaged infrastructure, including a grain warehouse. russia said the missiles were targeting ukrainian military assets, including a docked warship and a warehouse housing u.s. supplied anti-ship missiles. ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy decried the attack on odesa as "barbarism" and said it "destroyed the very possibility" of dialogue with russia. in related news, some
