amy compton phillips. she is a cnn analyst. always good to talk to you. >> thanks for having me, rosemary. >> so the world health organization is reporting the largest single day increase in global coronavirus cases by its count while in the u.s. the death toll approaching 120,000 with 23 states seeing covid-19 cases rising and in ten states those cases are surging up 50% or more. what do these numbers signal to you? >> these numbers signal to me that people are getting a little bit complacent, particularly here in the u.s. you know, as i talk about it at work, as we are right now in the sixth mile of a 36 mile marathon and we have to just keep going and doing all the really hard things. we know we have to get back to life. we have to start earning an income. we have to start getting our economy going, but in doing so we have to do it differently than we did in 2019. and people are getting tired of it. and so it's easy to get lax and revert to our old habits, but when we do that, more and more people will die. so we cannot give

amy compton phillips. great to chat with you. >> thank you. great for having me. >> president trump has claimed that the coronavirus is dying out and that oklahoma's case numbers are very small and the spike has already ended. tulsa, oklahoma, of course is where he intends to hold his 20,000 strong rally saturday. what's your reaction to his false reading of the numbers and, of course, his intentions to pack so many people together without masks? >> yeah, unfortunately this is one of those areas where i am speechless by our government response to the pandemic, to be honest with you. you know, we are still in the midst of this first wave. we've come down a little bit but now as you know, in so many states it's going back up again. in oklahoma in particular they're seeing a spike in cases so if you have an area with a spike in cases and they put 20,000 people together in a closed environment, the risk of having explosive growth is huge. so this is a really worrisome moment. >> yeah. of course, he's getting those participants to sign a waiver so

amy compton phillips, a cnn medical analyst and chief clinical officer at providence health system. it's very nice to have you. thanks for joining us. could we just begin on that, on that dual test and what that will mean just in terms of slowing the spread and just informing people in this country? >> well, testing itself doesn't inform the spread but testing on it and acting on it can slow the spread. there's influenza illness and that's cough, fever, short n.e.t. of breath and once flu season comes during the fall we'll have to distinguish what's traditional influenza and what's coronavirus. influenza, you know, we ask people to stay home and recover but we don't really require them to go into quarantine and self-isolate. with covid because of the lack of antibodies in the population and the significantly higher risk than flu, we really want people to take that extra step to -- to self-quarantine, and so it's really critical to distinguish and so a dual test can definitely help to do that. >> so, doctor, you heard the president make claims will testing and the white house denied
