i'm amy goodman. amy goodman: we spend today's hour looking at the bloody struggle to obtain-and protect- voting rights in this country. since 2010, at least 10 states have passed laws that require people to show a government- issued photo id when they go to the polls. while supporters say the laws protect against voter fraud, others argue they're more likely to suppress voter turnout among people of color, the poor and proper id and find it harder to obtain one. in total, 16 states have passed restrictive voting laws that could shape the 2012 election, including the vital swing states of florida and pennsylvania. well, on monday, naacp president and ceo ben jealous made voting rights the center of his address to the group's annual convention in houston. >> we have a choice to make. we can allow this election to be stolen in advance, as politicians from pennsylvania and recently bragged about money thought no one was listening. talking about his state's voter id law. we can double down on democracy. a

i'm amy goodman. the u.s. ambassador to libya and three embassy staffers have been killed in an attack on the u.s. consulate in the libyan city of benghazi. christopher stevens and three aides died of smoke inhalation after an angry mob set fire to the building in protest of an amateur anti-muslim film produced in the united states. the film also sparked protests in egypt, where demonstrators scaled a wall of u.s. embassy in cairo and burnt the american flag. the film called "in a sense of muslims," was funded by private donors and made by director who's called islam a cancer. we will have more on this story after headlines. the white house is denying reports president obama has snubbed israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu by refusing a meeting with netanyahu -- when netanyahu visits washington next week. the reported rift is said to center around u.s.-israeli tensions over iran, with netanyahu continuing to push for a military attack. on tuesday, he escalated his rhetoric say no one in the world

i'm amy goodman. we are broadcasting from freeport, illinois. the justice department's inspector general has issued a long anticipated report faulting top federal officials over the controversial gun sting operation known as fast and furious while exonerating attorney general eric holder. the operation saw u.s. agents allowing the sale of thousands of guns to middlemen for mexican drug cartels in an attempt to gain access to senior level figures within mexico's criminal organization. the nearly 500-page report, issued wednesday, accuses federal prosecutors and agents from the bureau of all, tobacco and firearms of allowing the botched sting to continue through a "series of misguided strategies, tactics, errors in judgment, and management failures." holder has faced a number of republican attacks over the program, culminating in a contempt vote by the house earlier this year. while the report exonerates eric holder, it condemns assistant attorney general brewer and an aide who promptly resigned on wednesday. more than a dozen officials are single

i'm amy goodman. thousands of teachers, parents, students marched in the streets of chicago monday, the opening day of the city's first public school strike in a quarter- century. almost 30,000 people -- teachers and support staff have walked out. the teachers' union called the strike sunday night after months of negotiations failed to resolve demands for pay raises, better classroom conditions, job security, and evaluations. we'll have more from chicago later in the broadcast. events are being held across the country today to mark the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. on the eve of this anniversary, federal officials announced first responders and other survivors exposed to toxic compounds from the wreckage at ground zero may now be entitled to free cancer treatment for the first time. the u.s. government has added about 50 types of cancer to its list of illnesses covered under the zadroga act. the law, signed by president obama last year, was named after new york police detective james zadroga,
