abc7's amy hollyfield is live at the san mateo bridge where crews found a crack that had to be repaired immediately. >> they had to close a section of the right lane going westbound. it is expected to cause big problems in the morning. a piece of steel that is supposed to help hold this bridge together in an earthquake has a crack of its own. >> even though there was no immediate danger to the public, there was no imminent danger of any kind of catastrophic failure, but when you do find a crack in an important system like this, then you do have to make immediate action. >> officials have shut down a section of the far right westbound lane of the san mateo bridge so they can fix the crack. the lane will be closed during tomorrow morning's commute. >> tomorrow morning it is going to be rough. if you normally use that bridge, we are expecting more con congestion. either the dunbarton or the bay bridge, or maybe swinging around. but do expect delays. >> the crack is 10 inches long and beneath the road. they found it during a safety inspection they conduct twice a year. >> we learned the ins

in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> state news now. governor schwarzenegger has finally signed a new state budget. it was a record 100 days past due. before signing it yesterday, the governor vetoed nearly $1 billion in additional spending. most of that related to social service programs like child care. the new budget includes $7.5 billion in cuts and relies on optimistic revenue assumption which means the next governor will likely have a similar crisis next year. the new budget calls for the state to sell off some of theirs buildings and lease them back. some are historic landmarks like the san francisco civic center, home to the state supreme court. >> i always believed in buying real estate rather than selling real estate. but, you know, when you are in a financial crisis like we are, then you have to make decisions. >> the sales could earn the state $1.2 billion but long-term the legislative budget office says taxpayers could be on the hook for $1.2 billion. more than 300 bids have been submitted for the property. bank of america

. >> amy hollyfield is here now and this is a moment of great pride for chile. >> the president of chile says this country is capable of great things. there is so much pride that even the capsule used to rescue them is red, white and blue, the country of the country's flag. the first miner out is 31 years old and very shy and chosen to go first because he is in the best condition. he was the first miner brought to the surface. after 69 days and a half mile journey through a narrow rescue shaft the much-anticipated rescue was actually happening. his wife and seven-year-old son burst into tears as they got the hug they waited for. avalos was then loaded on to a stretcher and taken to a medical triage for the first of a battery of tests. an hour later a second miner emerged to another big welcome. he brought souvenir rocks to laughing rescuers. after many hugs he lieded to take a victory lap well coming well wishers. since then, another grateful miner has emerged. the original plan was for these moments to be private and shielded from the public. but officials changed their minds at the las

in san francisco amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> other news a statewide amber alert has been issued fromouthern california after a mother says two strangers kidnapped their sons from their front yard. the amber alert is for these two little boys, a four-year-old and a two-year-old. two men in a gray or pewter colored dodge caravan minivan snatched them from their yard in anaheim around 8:00 last night. >> new controversy in the california's governor race. someone in jerry brown's campaign referred to meg whitman as a whore. the los angeles times reported it received an audio recording from the police union which has endorsed whitman. brown called the union and left a message and believing he had hung up the voice mail caught a conversation between brown and his aides. a deal with the union to exempt safety workers from the pension reform plan. at that point a voice can be heard saying what about saying she's a whore. it's not clear. actually there's no evidence that brown made the comment but that it was a staffer that made the comment. brown's manager said the discussion was a private c

in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> a look into some state unless you now. governor schwarzenegger has finally signed a new state budget. it was a record 100 days past due. before signing it yesterday, the governor vetoed nearly $1 billion in beneficial spending. most of that related to social service programs like child care. the new budget includes $7.5 billion in cuts and relies on optimistic revenue assumptions which means the next governor will face a similar crisis next year. it calls for the states to sell some of theirs buildings and lease them back. some are historic landmarks like the earl warren building, home to the state supreme court. >> i always believed in buying real estate rather than selling real estate. but, you know, when you are in a financial crisis like we are, then you have to make decisions. >> the sale could earn the state $1.2 billion but long-term the legislative budget office says taxpayers could be on the hook for $1.5 billion, more than 300 bids have already been submitted for those properties. hundreds of people came together

as amy hollyfield reports, several kids took bad falls and school officials are trying to find out why>> when lucas fell off the new play structure, it wasn't like his typical tumbles. >> it was different because i dive when i usually fall at the play structure. >> he broke his arm, his first broken bone. his mom figured it was an unfortunate accident until she found out lucas was not alone. a total of six kids in novato suffered broken bones after falling off new play structures at school in less than three weeks. the injuries prompted school officials to close down the playgrounds and call for a thorough inspection. they're considering three possibilities: first, that some of the features are too high. the second possibility, the new structures are just too popular and therefore too crowded. and a third explanation came from the manufacturer and the insurance company. >> you cannot open new play structures without proper training or retraining of your yard supervisors. >> since they don't know exactly why this happened, they're going to address most of the possibilities. they're goin
