top story of the morning coming to us from amy hollyfield. ing, amy. >> good morning, terry. i'm on yerba buena iland where the coast guard is in the middle of the intense search for a man who disappeared last night in the bay after the canoe capsized. moments ago they decided it's light enough and clear enough to launch helicopters so that is now up in the air. important tool in this search. the coast guard did call on help from all around the bay area. agencies have been helping in the search. eight of them. police have from saucelito, tiburon serged the coast land. national park police covered alcatraz and angel island. several fire department and the coast guard had boats on the bay all night long. still no, sign of the man. they hope the helicopter will make the difference. the man was in the canoe with two other people. the two other people swam to shore. but he stayed behind to try and retrieve some personal items. his friends went home, changed clothes. then went back looking for him and realized he never made it to shore. at least the

live in the newsroom, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> all right, amy. thanks a lot. >>> police in brisbane are investigating an accident that killed a fisherman when two boats collided in san francisco bay. a father and his 30-year-old son aboard a dinghy when it was hit by a 46-foot power boat yesterday afternoon. the fishing boat capsized, thrown both men in the bay off sierra point. the son was trapped underneath the boat and had to be pulled from the water by rescuers. he did not survive. >> that guy was doing cpr to try to get him back alive and stuff. another boat came in and they had another person. but he was alive and stuff. moving around. he looked banged up. >> officials say the father is in good condition. brisbane police say the larger power boat may not have seen the smaller boat and remained on the scene after notifying authorities. >>> 4:33. the el dorado county district attorney says phillip garrido told prosecutors he abducted at least three other people long before he kidnapped and held jaycee dugard captive for 18 years. garrido told

abc7's amy hollyfield is live in redwood city with explanation and reaction. amy? >> reporter: we just interviewed a financial advisor who told us his heart skipped a beat when he saw the dow jones this morning. if you saw gains in your portfolio at the beginning of this year, you probably have lost them by now. they're probably gone. wall street continues to worry about the economic weakness in the u.s. and in europe. the latest sign of weakness is the number of people filing for unemployment. the report from the labor department today showed that the job market remains stagnant. the fear, though, is that the recession is going to have two waves. >> i would say that this is definitely showing concerns that the market believes there is a larger chance of a double dip recession. >> is this an indicator this is coming? >> this is a concern about it. i wouldn't use it as a predictor that it's coming. it's showing that people are concerned that recession is more likely today than say last month or two months ago. >> now tomorrow, the government unemployment report come

amy hollyfield is live in richmond with more. >> reporter: it happened at the end of a dead-end street. police are still here trying to figure out why this house was chosen, how the intruder got in and if he took anything. he was surprised in the middle of his crime and that is when it turned deadly. >>> neighbors set said they heard gunshots and screaming coming from this home around 4:00 this morning. the man of the home woke up and apparently interrupted a burglary. >> right now it appears he was waking up and started cooking breakfast for his family. >> the intruder shot the man just as mother came in to see what was going on. >> everybody got woken up it appears the elderly female came in where the altercation may have been going on and it appears she was shot. >> the man's wife and two kids then ran from the home to the house across the street. >> you are shocked to see it happen. >> reporter: the family had just moved into the home about a year ago and worked hard to renovate it. they were doing the best they could. >> the father was extremely caring, concerned about his kids th

amy hollyfield joins us now from antioch. amy, police just gave you an update. >> i just got briefed, cheryl. they say the 16-year-old is refusing to meet with them. that he is avoiding police. officers say they do believe he is safe. his family members told them that he is okay. that the 16-year-old hasan ford is all right. but police are now looking into weather he was a victim, or if he knew the armed man he left with. hasan's boss would like to know. he was the one who was robbed and then saw hasan kidnapped at gunpoint. he said he would really like to talk to them. he is scared to show his face on tv. >> i haven't heard from him. i'm shocked he hasn't called me, because he has my cell number. something this serious i'm sure he would have called me by now or at least his mother. i have a good repertoire with her. she hasn't called. i've been in contact with some of the distant cousins. the cousins as well have not been in contact with his mother. so this is all kind of shocking. >> yesterday a man with a sawed off shotgun

abc7's amy hollyfield is live at the richmond police department. amy? >> reporter: we have a picture of 25-year-old rose mcfadden. police found her dead on the sidewalk early this morning. they don't know why someone shot her. and the male companion she was with, if-year-old man in cit -- 24-year-old man suffering with life threatening injuries. he was shot in the head. officers have not made any arrests. friends and relatives of 25-year-old rose mcfadden rushed to the scene of her death within an hour of the murder. they watched police in total disbelief, that the violence in richmond had taken the life of this mother of four. >> out of control. it's out of control. if it happened to rose, it can happen to anybody. >> reporter: mcfadden and 24-year-old man were in the car waiting forgate to open. it happened at central richmond, area toe yore to us for the -- notorious for gang activity but the police don't think they had any ties to gangs. >> there is no indication they were having any type of a lifestyle that would bring them in that situation. they

amy hollyfield joins us. amy? >> reporter: the questioning goes both ways. protesters are questioning bart and the fact that officials turned off cell phone service during a protest. and san francisco mayor ed lee this morning is also criticizing bart for doing that. bart officials are standing by their tactics saying this area is fine. you can demonstrate your freedom of speech and you can have a protest up here on the sidewalk. it's when you go downstairs. under ground they say it can get dangerous and they're going to use extreme measures to protect the passengers. heather desmond made it to the san francisco civic center bart station without problems but she is concerned about getting out. she decided to change her routine this afternoon in the hopes of avoiding a scheduled protest. >> i'm getting on the embarcadero to get home as quick as possible. before it all starts. >> bart riders are finding themselveses in the middle of the dispute between the bart officials and protestsers from the group anonymous. not only is the evening commute in jeopardy, but

that's where amy hollyfield is live. >> it's dark and foggy. it's very quiet out here on 12th avenue in the sunset district. the thieves took advantage of the conditions and slipped right in here, four times within a week. and got the goods. now there are a few obstacles out here to overcome. we found a little critter patrolling the area. keeping a close watch on the campus at alice fong yew elementary school. there is a security guard here. that's about it. this is a large campus. it's dark and foggy, so the thief managed to hit the school four times in the last week. san francisco police say it is unusual. and the problem seems to be plaguing the neighborhood. over on ortega, the french school also got hit. across the bay, san leandro lost power to the street lights when the thief went underground and stole 10,000 pounds of copper. police say that operation was not only obviously illegal but also dangerous. the perp could have been electrocuted. the record price in copper explains the criminal activity. at one point it got to $4.50 a pound no

amy hollyfield has more. amy? >> reporter: here is the report they're going through inside in hearing now. i counted 35 examples of when phillip garrido's parole should have been revoked. at one point in here, they called the federal agent supervising garrido utterly incomp tant. they are detailing the top five mistakes made in the case [ one, he was released from prison in 1988. though he was supposed to be serving 15 years for rape, he only serve 11. and also, the mental health expert was too trusting especially since garrido fooled everyone. >> so the biggest problem throughout the mistakes is the failure of law enforcement state and federal and local to identify phillip garrido as who he really is. a dangerous sexual predator and master manipulator. >> reporter: also part of the presentation, home videos from the garridos. prosecutors say the couple would film children at playgrounds to help feed phillip garrido's lust for kids. listen to this example as gua nancy garrido is asking a little girl to do the spli

abc7's amy hollyfield is live at the shooting scene. what is happening? >> this is what everybody wants to prevent, memorials like this one. this is what the community created where a 3-year-old boy is shot to death. this is the location that advocates have chosen for the press conference this morning and they're saying that the gang injunkses are not the way to prevent violence. city council member de la fuentes said he will call for more gang injunction in oakland and said this at the funeral of carlos nava. the argument is if the gang members had been listed on a gang injunction they wouldn't have been able to hang out together and maybe the shooting would haven't happened. opponents say that is a stretch. but the councilmember wants to try it. >> i think from the mayor to the city council we have to not just come to the event and mourn people but we have to enact real tools for the police to do their job. >> we want councilmember and harry reid to look at needs of the community. they haven't spoken to the family or the community. they are pushing an a

abc7's amy hollyfield is live in redwood city with explanation and reaction. amy? >> reporter: we just interviewed a financial advisor who told us his heart skipped a beat when he saw the dow jones this morning. if you saw gains in your portfolio at the beginning of this year, you probably have lost them by now. they're probably gone. wall street continues to worry about the economic weakness in the u.s. and in europe. the latest sign of weakness is the number of people filing for unemployment. the report from the labor department today showed that the job market remains stagnant. the fear, though, is that the recession is going to have two waves. >> i would say that this is definitely showing concerns that the market believes there is a larger chance of a double dip recession. >> is this an indicator this is coming? >> this is a concern about it. i wouldn't use it as a predictor that it's coming. it's showing that people are concerned that recession is more likely today than say last month or two months ago. >> now tomorrow, the government unemployment report come

amy hollyfield has the latest. >> the victim's been out there for 11 hours. it's very dark out there. the officers are on the water and the shoreline looking for him. they tell me that they operate under the assumption that the victim survived and needs to be rescued. there are eight agencies that are out there looking for him. officers are searching online and on the water. they checked alcatraz, angel iland, shoreline surrounding the bay. there is no sign of him. there are three people in the canoe. it capsized 6:15 last night. two people made it to shore. the third person stayed behind to retrieve personal items. the other two went home, changed clothes, realized that their friend never made it to shore. they coulded find hism. that's when they notified the coast guard. the canoe capsized near treasure island. the spokesperson for the coast guard told us he doesn't know if the missing man has a life jacket. they'll launch the helicopter as soon as it's light out but until then they are relying on the boat and people on the shoreline. they are asking for an

amy hollyfield joins us. amy? >> reporter: the questioning goes both ways. protesters are questioning bart and the fact that officials turned off cell phone service during a protest. and san francisco mayor ed lee this morning is also criticizing bart for doing that. bart officials are standing by their tactics saying this area is fine. you can demonstrate your freedom of speech and you can have a protest up here on the sidewalk. it's when you go downstairs. under ground they say it can get dangerous and they're going to use extreme measures to protect the passengers. heather desmond made it to the san francisco civic center bart station without problems but she is concerned about getting out. she decided to change her routine this afternoon in the hopes of avoiding a scheduled protest. >> i'm getting on the embarcadero to get home as quick as possible. before it all starts. >> bart riders are finding themselveses in the middle of the dispute between the bart officials and protestsers from the group anonymous. not only is the evening commute in jeopardy, but

amy hollyfield is live in richmond with more. >> reporter: it happened at the end of a dead-end street. police are still here trying to figure out why this house was chosen, how the intruder got in and if he took anything. he was surprised in the middle of his crime and that is when it turned deadly. >>> neighbors set said they heard gunshots and screaming coming from this home around 4:00 this morning. the man of the home woke up and apparently interrupted a burglary. >> right now it appears he was waking up and started cooking breakfast for his family. >> the intruder shot the man just as mother came in to see what was going on. >> everybody got woken up it appears the elderly female came in where the altercation may have been going on and it appears she was shot. >> the man's wife and two kids then ran from the home to the house across the street. >> you are shocked to see it happen. >> reporter: the family had just moved into the home about a year ago and worked hard to renovate it. they were doing the best they could. >> the father was extremely caring, concerned about his kids th

amy hollyfield joins us now from antioch. amy, police just gave you an update. >> i just got briefed, cheryl. they say the 16-year-old is refusing to meet with them. that he is avoiding police. officers say they do believe he is safe. his family members told them that he is okay. that the 16-year-old hasan ford is all right. but police are now looking into weather he was a victim, or if he knew the armed man he left with. hasan's boss would like to know. he was the one who was robbed and then saw hasan kidnapped at gunpoint. he said he would really like to talk to them. he is scared to show his face on tv. >> i haven't heard from him. i'm shocked he hasn't called me, because he has my cell number. something this serious i'm sure he would have called me by now or at least his mother. i have a good repertoire with her. she hasn't called. i've been in contact with some of the distant cousins. the cousins as well have not been in contact with his mother. so this is all kind of shocking. >> yesterday a man with a sawed off shotgun

amy hollyfield has more. amy? >> reporter: here is the report they're going through inside in hearing now. i counted 35 examples of when phillip garrido's parole should have been revoked. at one point in here, they called the federal agent supervising garrido utterly incomp tant. they are detailing the top five mistakes made in the case. abc7's amy hollyfield is live at the shooting scene. what is happening? >> this is what everybody wants to prevent, memorials like this one. this is what the community created where a 3-year-old boy is shot to death. this is the location that advocates have chosen for the press conference this morning and they're saying that the gang injunkses are not the way to prevent violence. city council member de la fuentes said he will call for more gang injunction in oakland and said this at the funeral of carlos nava. the argument is if the gang members had been listed on a gang injunction they wouldn't have been able to hang out together and maybe the shooting would haven't happened. opponents say that is a stretch. but the councilmember wants to try it. >> i think from the mayor to the city council we have to not just come to the event and mourn people but we have to enact real tools for the police to do their job. >> we want councilmember and harry reid to look at needs of the community. they haven't spoken to the family or the community. they are pushing an a

amy hollyfield is live at civic center station in san francisco. >> reporter: today is the day. police are going to move in more quickly today. their actions should than different than last. today is the day that bart riders seem ready to push back. these protests have been happening on mondays and shutting down stations and really causing problems and hassles for commuters. place say the support the right to protest but starting today they are going to aggressively protect the rights of others like bart riders. they are not deterring the protestors. they say they don't take well to threats, but if they had any sympathy or support among bart riders the support is hard to find. this is what we've been hearing a lot of in the last few days. >> i'm tired of the protestors, to be honest with you. i'm usually for freedom of speech. that is fine. when it affects the working class i'm tired of it. why don't they go directly to bart officials, do something with them. we work for a living. >> the last protest mainly impacted civic center and powell station. demonstrators also marched on
