amy hollyfield is live near the scene with the story. you've experienced that smell. >> reporter: yeah it is pretty bad. i'm taking one for the team doing this story. we haven't seen any dog walkers or joggers out which is unusual for this time of morning. it is cold out, but people are loyal to their jog or to their dogs. because it stinks out here is what i'm guessing. it smells like sulphur that rotten egg smell. officials tell us it is not harmful, just unpleasant. a crude oil pipeline spilled and that released this icky smell. the advice is stay in or leave the area if it bothers you. you may feel a headache. i felt lightheaded at one point. they insist that's your body reacting to the smell not to anything toxic in the air. it has residents wondering what is going on? >> i've been smelling this the last three, four days today is the strongest it is getting worse. it is like really bad now. it is like a pungent odor. i don't know if it is gas, sulphur, something like that >> if you get strong odors you may want to air out your home.

amy hollyfield is live in vallejo. the veteran officer was killed yesterday during a foot chase? >> reporter: yes. >> this community is reaching out to support its police department during this sad time. look at their entryway, the community is filling it up with flowers, candle, a balloon and very, very nice notes about the officer and how sad everyone is this happen. officer james capoot was kill while chasing a suspected bank robber. he was driving his car and forced the suspect to wreck his suv. the suspect shot the officer as he was running away. police did arrest one man. then officers searched backyards and sheds, all afternoon and evening for a possible second peck. while looking the community started dealing -- with and reacting to what happened. >> he was fair, you know. i believe god is going to give him a pass cause you shouldn't go out that way after serving the community this long. >> reporter: police searched all the way into the night last night for a possible suspect. they've not made any more arrests. they did give up for the night. investigators did go home and

we begin with amy hollyfield near frank ogawa plaza. >> reporter: good morning. the protesters have received word that police are coming. they've done what they can to make it tough forever them to get in. look at the intersection at 14th and broadway. a huge crowd so big that you can't get through. this is where police showed up the last time they cleared out this camp, they parked here. now you can't get through. the crowd has been playing music all night. sometimes they stop the music and bust out into a chant about how they are not going to go. earlier yesterday, protest given their third notice to leave the plaza. the notice was a little different. it declared that every other major park in oakland is off limits to occupy camper. the protesters ignored the notices, they are still here. if or when police do come to clear out these activists it is going to be expensive. the sheriff's office told us this does not qualify for mutual aid any more. because they were let back after clearing them out before 0 they considered it a planned event. oakland -- oakland ha

amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >>> 4:33. switching gears. new developments in the shootout in oakland monday that injured seven, including a toddler. that little boy is still in critical condition after taking a bullet to the head. police have combed through video and have identified several people they would like to talk to. alan wang has more. >> reporter: you can see a group gathered in the parking lot preparing to shoot a music video 6:30 monday evening. three armed suspects approach on the sidewalk next to the store and open fire as they come around the building. shots send everyone running for cover. one person falls to the ground and appears to be firing back. two attackers withdraw, one stays and continues firing his weapon. the man on the ground appears to be hit and drags himself behind the truck. car windows are shattered, tires blown out, building and several cars riddled with bullets. inside the store a customer yells and takes cover a man in a wheelchair knocks over merchandise as he and others retreat to the back of the store.

. >>> amy hollyfield is at snow park in oakland is that becoming a hot spot or still quiet?porter: there are more people here now. this area is definitely in transition, this movement is. they don't all agree on how to run this camp. they have to do some regrouping now their spot in front of city hall is no longer an option. 10 police officers watched over frank ogawa plaza overnight to make sure no one set up a tent. their plan to revent occupy oakland from creating another tent city -- prevent occupy oakland from creating another tent city here. the question is where to go now. three stayed overnight, they did not pitch a tent. >> i'm here to stay and i will stay no matter what and i will get arrested again for the fourth time and fifth time and again and again but i'm not leaving, this is my home. >> reporter: others moved over to snow park where a branch of occupy oakland set up weeks ago. >> [ unintelligible ] >> reporter: the two camps could have trouble merging. those relocating from frank ogawa would like to see fee thursday here they had before such as an interfaith

amy hollyfield is live near the scene. >> reporter: pg&e says it looks like a construction crew broke in pipe they say there's a dent in that makes residents and consumer advocates nervous. they want to know how this happened. why this is allowed to happen and when and why wind it discovered sooner. the failed pipeline dominated the conversation this morning. >> commenting we were thankful it was just water. there are of course all of our neighborhoods right here. all this brush and we just imagined how horrible it would be had a gas explosion i go nighted immediately and we would have lost our homes. >> reporter: pg&e was testing the line by pumping water at a higher than normal pressure when it ruptured. >> this is the purpose to find any weaknesses in the pipe, much higher pressure we would normally operate at. for thus is a success. >> reporter: consumer advocates -- advocates say they would hardly classify this as a success. >> it is their responsibility, if there is a problem, they are supposed to find the problem and fix it before there's a pipeline failure, not after. success

amy hollyfield is live with the latest. >> reporter: police moved the last tents out within the last hour. the plaza is still crowded. here you have students who still wanted to to class but want to support the movement so they are holding class outside. -- here you have protesters having a meeting debriefing about what happened last night and gearing up for another day of action. uc berkeley police hit protesters with batons and grabbed them by their hair. activists were trying to start occupy cal. uc officials said tents and sleeping bags are in violation of campus policy. when police allowed three tents and several sleeping bags to stay, from 2 a.m. on, the protesters felt like they had won their battle with police. >> i don't know what the goal was but we got our tents and we are spending the night. so i guess it is a victory. >> reporter: the activists who stayed all night said it was a cold long night. >> i'm proud of anyone who stayed and supported us through thick and thin. >> reporter: by day breadth occupy cal last -- lost most of is steam. most took down their tents. >> we

amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >>> now to occupy davis.n a few hours two more meetings are expected to draw large crowds on the uc campus over police pepper spraying protesters this is video just in. you see chancellor linda katehi talking with some of the protesters. 74 tents went up last night. right now no plans to dismantle the camp. the uc system's president has call the chance lores of all 10 campuses -- chancellors of all 10 campuses and reminded them of people's rights to protest peacefully. the police chief and two officers involved in the incident are on leave. students are calling for the chancellor to resign. she said she won't. >>> in santa rosa police cleared out an encampment at city hall at 4:00 this morning. it has been up three weeks. police did not make arrests. at least 27 who applied for camping permits are being allowed to return. officials say they've been warning protesters this raid has been coming for nearly a week. >>> right now uc berkeley students in pajamas and sleeping bags are taking part in a mass sleep-out

. >> amy hollyfield is standing by at oakland children's hospital with new information on the littley and the other victims. >> reporter: the mood is grim. we spoke to the aunt of the little boy we asked how he was doing. she shook her head and said, not good. a family member told us doctors say it is going to be a few days until they can say how or if he will pull through. hiram lawrence was shot in theqk head while in his father's arms last night he's one his second birthday is next month one relative said he did make it through surgery now it is wait and watch. several family members are here the wait looks agonizing. they were with the toddler all night long. police have been here. we saw eight investigators stop by this morning at about 4:30. they for about an hour they are not any closer to making any arrests. officers were here last night closely watching who came to the hospital and talking to family members, even searched one of the relative's cars. relatives say they are hoping witnesses will help police solve this crime. >> just a sad thing. just sad that people can do thi

amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> everyone is waiting to hear from the mayor and the police chief.'s go to katie. when can we expect to hear from them? >> reporter: good morning. we've been waiting and the latest estimate is that the mayor will address the media around noon today. in the meantime we understand staff is compiling the statistics from last night. the total damage that was done on the -- and the number of arrests that were may. those numbers hope to become clear maybe around noon today. the mayor has a lot of questions to answer. she was pretty much touting yesterday there would be minimal police presence at the general strike yesterday and there was, for a while. but the video you are looking at now shows you how that turned out in the light of day this morning, there is quite a bit of damage downtown oakland as well as vandalism. questions for the mayor include, are you still happy with your plan? what would you have done anything differently and where does the city go from here? it does not look like the protesters have any intense of going away a lot to learn from

let's begin with amy hollyfield. >> reporter: this plaza is the center of it all. they've had to block off this intersection and a couple of blocks at broadway and 14th to handle the huge crowds. right now the group is marching through the streets targeting the banks. they were speakers here this morning. even a surprise. a flash mob broke out at 14th and bring a group did a dance to "i will survive." this was a crowd favorite the group learned the dance moments before they went out and did it. we've seen all ages, babies to grandmothers. teachers, nurses, students, quite a variety of people showing support for this general strike. those who did skip work today tell us they are satisfied with the turn-out and how the strike is going. >> i think [ unintelligible ] all the small businesses that closed -- [ inaudible ] >> fantastic so far we had angela davis speaking drawing connections between here and other struggles around the world saying we are for the occupies of oakland and say no to the occupation of palestine. it is great to be political discussion and figuri
