joining us to discuss this, in new york, amy holmes. here in washington, david corn, washington bureau chief and analyst for msnbc and author of a new book about president obama entitled "showdown." amy holmes, was the media frenzy over this etch-a-sketch business over justified? >> i love to see that you have one. where is my etch-a sketch? the only reason why this could work, unfortunately for the romney campaign, is because it has been sort of a continuing theme of his candidacy. so he had his campaign manager stepping all over his big victory in illinois. using a very colorful term and a product that producers could run out and buy to use as props on their newscasts. the reason why it trended is because there's perhaps a little bit of truth in the gaffe. >> the stock in the etch-a-sketch company tripled. i still can't believe this. but whether it's a gaffe, mistake, poor choice of word played into the -- >> at least he didn't call him mr. potato head. much of journalism is really about shorthand. reporters spend all day covering lon

we are back with amy holmes and mike allen and dana lash. mike, it was pretty upbeat.e was talking about the voter his a different mind tonight. >> wolf, great interview. we will see a lot of that tape and there he goes again. he was talking about the campaign and they know they need a tougher message. a small sign of this. i'm told that mitt romney has been saying that he is out to replace barack obama in coming days. i would look for mitt romney to say he will defeat barack obama. a small example of how they are week is how they are tweaking. pressure on the public stage and behind the scenes for newt gingrich to get out. the campaigns will be cautious. you saw the santorum strategist not taking the debate and not directly confronting newt gingrich. silent on this question. they don't want to back gingrich into a corner. they want him to figure it out on his own. keep the conservative leader saying that rick santorum has earned it. conservative leaders saying it's been a great run. go out as a happy warrior. >> you like romney. what piece of advice do you want to sha

want to bring in democratic strategist kiki mcclain and conservative independent amy holmes.o sort all this out. so it really is a game of the numbers here, right? we're talking about 1144 delegates to win the nomination. romney has a big lead here, but can he get to the magic number before the republican convention? amy, game this out for us? do you think that's possible? >> well, it is possible, and, of course, there's a lot of pressure being put on newt gingrich to drop out. i think one of the most interesting findings that we have is that gallup found that this gingtorum vote is really split pretty evenly between newt -- if newt gingrich were to drop out between rick santorum and mitt romney. so, of course, the pressure is being brought to bear. >> all right. so you're going to need one of these guys to drop out before the convention. kiki, weigh in here. could president obama be still wondering who his opponent is 160 days away with a possibility of this open convention? >> sure, he could. because anything can happen, and what's most interesting out of this is that you'v
