that's where amy klobuchar said.ne of the five democrats on who will be off the campaign trail at a time when biden and buttigieg can be in iowa meeting with voters. how much of a disadvantage can that be? >> for amy klobuchar, a huge disadvantage. she has been showing up consistently in iowa. the challenge she has is she's only been showing up consistently in iowa. even though she's raised a lot of money, she's not as well funded as the top four candidates meaning biden, sanders, warren and pete buttigieg. not even close. even if she does place fourth or fifth, she has to go to new hampshire where you have two neighboring senators and two other candidates competing it's very hard for her to break in there. you take her midwest candidacy, kind of more moderate, will it play in south carolina? the problem i see with klobuchar, she's just not able, if she does really well in iowa, how does she break into those other states and make it have enough money for super tuesday? that's where she would have to keep her eye on.

amy klobuchar is just right. so she's really working to convince caucus goers here in iowa that she is the middle of the road candidate that can go up against donald trump. and that she has the appropriate amount of experience to do so. >> great to see you, my friend. while senator sanders and klobuchar, their campaigns are in the early voting states. one of their fellow contenders suffered a big setback today. former massachusetts governor deval patrick's name will not appear on michigan's democratic primary presidential ballot. the detroit news reports that the michigan board state of -- board of state canvassers agreed with a report from the michigan department of state, which found that patrick's campaign failed to submit enough valid signatures to qualify for the march 10th primary ballot. patrick launched his campaign on november 14th after the secretary of state had already submitted lists of candidates for the ballot. his campaign had to submit at least 11,345 valid petition signatures. but state official

"klobuchar has also survived in a race that has already seen the departures of candidates like senator kamala harris, broueto o'rour o'rourke, who received more attention, but were unable to sustain their campaigns. the debate on thursday night, the smallest so far of the primary cycle has earned her widespread praise with a number of strategists and pundits saying it marked a breakout moment. what's your sense -- do you get the sense that the senator from minnesota may have enough in the tank to power her through iowa and the early voting states, no matter what? >> well, right now amy klobuchar's strategy is very much to focus on iowa. sth she is from a neighboring state, she's well known in the midwest and she's very much -- while you've seen elizabeth warren, bernie sanders, joe biden have these much larger scale events in iowa and new hampshire and south carolina, you've really seen amy klobuchar do

we're now having an amy klobuchar moment.s going to be a complicated picture because in the democratic rules and the structure of the democratic primary, they're proportional. 15% and you get delegates and they're front loading it between the beginning of iowa and super tuesday on march 3rd. basically four and-a-half weeks, 48% of the delegates will be chosen and by the end of march, 69% of the delegates will be chosen and they're going to be at least in the first -- you know, between iowa and super tuesday, there's going to be five people who will be capable of getting 15% or more in any one of those states. paul: that means if we don't at the end of march have a real clear front-runner, this thing is going the distance to the convention or has a high probability of doing that in. >> i think so. i wrote it in a column in the wall street journal. paul.paul: i real every word. >> i know. you take a pen to a couple of them but that's your job. you had more space for people like amy klobuchar who has an appeal she is running as a pragmatic progressive. that sensibility was larger on the stage as compared to the elizabeth warren and sanders more aggressive approach to fundamentally changing america's capitolist system. the question is whether amy klobuchar can translate that added attention and star turn she had into progress in iowa where she has to break out in order to become a contender. >> laying out points there many parts that center on the ee condition my, how things are working out for millions of americans. can we talk about the shift that perhaps amy klobuchar is gaining some steam over some of the more left-leaning and far left-leaning policies that perhaps elizabeth warren and bernie sanders have put out there is the strategy still sound to go after the wealthy and capitalist system in america. >> i'm not sure it is. i think candidates like elizabeth warren and bernie sanders. at least as elizabeth warren calls it, quote/unquote big structural change. unemployment rate is at a 50-year low. next year, it might be a 60-ye

mayor pete has been spending a lot of time in iowa, as has amy klobuchar.p. >> that's what's great about bernie sanders. i don't agree with him at all, but he is consistent since being elected to the united states in 2007, he has stood for socialism, for free college, for medicare for all. i think voters when they look at bernie sanders, they're pretty much made up that they like socialism and nobody else. tracee: looking back at 2016, he finished less than 3/10 of a percentage point behind hillary clinton, the closest margin in iowa history, so an interesting note there. we have 15 democratic candidates going into 2020. do you see any of them dropping out before iowa? after iowa? where do you see them going? >> well, i don't see any democrats dropping out because iowa is important for two reasons. one, it's the first time you really get to put your money where your mouth is. it's the first time that the democratic party has actual votes. and second, it's important because when you win in iowa, you don't necessarily need a lot of money for media. iowa is cr

what's important for amy klobuchar.and shine and be competitive if she comes in maybe one, two, three or even four and go forward with her campaign. if she doesn't do it there, she folds. she's going after pete buttigieg because that's the person she's more in the similar kind of middle of the road lane with politically. she's not, she's not a progressive. she's fiscally responsible democrat. she wants to get things done. she can't go after biden because that really wouldn't work to her advantage the same way. she thinks she can make end roads there. it made all the sense in the world. the other thing when you look at pete buttigieg he has to be fighting hard there because he comes in strong in iowa and go to new hampshire and really do well. elizabeth warren has to be scared to death of pete buttigieg in iowa because she could come in third or fourth in her own neighboring state. that is going to be a problematic thing for her. >> just to add very quickly to that point. what is important for amy klobuchar even if she d
