and interestingly it was also an airbus. it was an airbus a-321. the same that was bombed in somalia. this other time in the past year when islamic terror groups have been able to get a bomb on board, this time it was a chartered passenger flight. it was flying from a resort city in egypt called sharm el sheikh back to spartanburg in russia. an isis affiliated terrorist group in the sinai peninsula in egypt claimed credit for smuggling a bomb on board that plane. when that bomb exploded, it didn't take that air craft all the way down. all 224 people were killed when the bomb blew up. it is this past october. october 2015. so the somali incident was february of this year. the egypt crash over the sinai was last october. now, obviously you can go further back in time to find more instances of bombed flights and terrorists targeting passenger airliners but even if you just look at the two instances we have had in the past year, it is clear that international terrorist groups are actively targeting passenger airlines with bombs. i mean, despite heighte

this was an airbus a-320. it was built in 2003. very modern aircraft with all of the updates you would imagine given the fact that it is, of course, built in france and being flown by egyptair, and we believe the maintenance done in france as well. a couple of other factoids here. the pilot had 6,100 hours of flying time. that's very respectable. the first officer had about 27 hours of flying time, again respectable. the plane last heard from at about 2:30 a.m. local time, but there m been no distress call whatsoever. and it had just been -- we believe the plane had been serviced in some fashion on wednesday, so yesterday. we don't know the extent of that service that might have been performed on the plane, but that's normal. the planes are constantly being checked and rechecked and maybe they do some sort of a minor tweak here and there before you go in for a major overhaul. we believe that this was some sort of a standard routine type of service on the plane. and as you mentioned, alex, this is a very heavily traveled route betwe

they'll find the black boxes, the wreckage and the pieces to answer all those questions and in an airbuss certain modes, a fly by wire airplane. in the old airplanes and what i fly, you pull on the stick or turn it cables, pulleys electronics move the devices. in the airbus, moving the joystick is a signal to tell the airplane what to do and if you're a pilot in an airbus and if you at cruise altitude and speeds, and you throw that stick hard to the left, the airplane will not go hard to the left. it will only turn as quickly as it thinks is safely possible. and again, if you go back to the right. so these maneuvers if we know, if they're correct, this radar facility was 400 miles from this airplane. so until we find the flight data recorder, we are not really going to know what the airplane did but if these are accurate they're not consistent with the way an airbus is flown at cruise. >> okay. let's hope for the families' stakes they find that and some wreckage, the tail where you have all that information, lying in that -- those data recorders hopefully they find that soon. mary and fr

so the, you know, the fact that it's an airbus 320, we don't quite know. we need a little more information to be able to tell the age of the plane and whether it has the most modern and up-to-date equipment or whether it's a plane that's been retrofitted and they needed additional training. but in terms of world's airline fleets, it's like the 737, it's a workhorse. we've all been on them hundreds of times. and it's, you know, it's a modern aircraft, if it's a more modern one, glass cockpit. it would have been on auto pilot at that point in the flight, particularly at 37,000 feet. if something went wrong at that altitude and they were on auto pilot, the auto pilot would have shut off and they would have to hand-fly the plane. so it's very difficult to tell. but, 37,000 feet is concerning. >> and mary, they corrected it. they sent out a corrected tweet saying it was 10 miles into egyptian air space. originally, they said, if you look at the tweet, it was 80 miles, but serviit was 10 miles egyptian air space. i don't know if that makes a difference. >> yes,
