the average life expectancy of an american in 1900 was just over 40 years. now it's close to 80. this has been a tremendous public health achievement. and if you look, most of those years of gain that have occurred over this century haven't necessarily occurred because of very technologic medical advances. they've occurred because of very, very simple public health measures, whether it's sanitation, or whether it's refrigeration, or whether it's handwashing and the availability of soap, or whether it's vaccines, those are, by and large, what have driven the improvements in life expectancy over this century. and in particular, in the area of infectious diseases. we have to realize in 1900 that tuberculosis was the single leading cause of death in the unitedtates, and, at the close of this century, the total number of deaths from tuberculosis in this country are under 1500, probably closer to 1000 people a year. we have a really brilliant saying in geriatrics, which is, "the longer you live, the longer you live." and what that means is, as you age, your life expectancy actually inc
