for a long time anacostia was segregated. in its early years, it was even illegal for african-americans to own land in parts of this community. and even after those barriers were torn down, others emerged. poverty, violence, inequality. but despite these challenges, anacostia continues to push forward. that's what i admire about this community and what i admire about all of you all. in the face of incredible struggles, you refuse to be defined by the hardships or adversities. instead what defines you is perseverance. what defines you is character. what defines you is the same commitment to education, to hard work, to setting high standards for yourselves that has made this country great. it's a commitment reflected in anacostia alums like frederick gregory who graduated in 1958 from this school and became the first african-american in our history to command a space shuttle. it's reflected in the small business owners who have opened up furniture stores and theaters in the community, the artists and leaders who have lived in a

news4's megan mcgrath is at the announcement at anacostia high school. megan, tell us about the ads. good morning. >> well, good morning, about a are a. they are just unveiling them inside the gym at anacostia high school. d.c. public schools have a real problem with truancy. the chronic truancy rate is 12%. that's for students who have missed 15 or more days of school without an excuse. and many of those kids, of course are not going to reach graduation. so they are trying to reverse this trend. that's why they have come out with this new ad campaign. the theme, more you learn, the more you earn. and what better way to reach children is -- than through children. children children who have experienced difficulties of going to school and students who have struggled with truancy issues. these are some of the kids that are in this ad campaign and they are talking to their fellow students and encouraging them to stay in class so that they can succeed. among them sasha. ballou high school. she had a real truancy i shall knew ninth grade. she turned it around

the district was recently selected to receive technical design assistance for that anacostia stop aimed at helping enhance pedestrian and bike safety in public spaces. tonight the design committee kicked off a three-day community work session at matthew's memorial baptist church in southeast. apparently metro also needs help from business consultants. public records show metro is paying more than $51 million to 18 different consultant companies to help better run the transit agency. metro specsman dan stessel says it's actually a small number and the 51 million is less than 2% of the operating budget. >>> the white house and congressional republicans appear to be on another collision course. the president outlined his 2013 budget today from northern virginia while gop lawmakers on capitol hill are calling that budget debt on arrival. here's fox 5's tom fitzgerald. >> reporter: the white house's budget arrived on capitol hill just before the president himself arrived in northern virginia community college to promote it. if congress adopts this budget, then along with the cuts that we've

anacostia high school was evacuated earlier today after a fire broke out there. the blaze started in an area of the school that was under construction. no students were injured, but two firefighters did get hurt. no word yet exactly on what caused the fire or if anacostia will reopen after the president's day holiday. >> firefighters and police risk their lives to reach a two- year-old girl in a burning home. tonight that little girl is in critical condition. the fire began around 1:45 this morning. three adults and a nine-year- old boy made it out of the townhouse, but they could not get to the little girl. a police officer set up a ladder to help firefighters get into the house more quickly to rescue her. rescuers performed cpr on the toddler once they got her outside of the house. >> one person was killed in a crash in the beltway. a car and tractor trailer collided. happened around 3:00 a.m. the car caught fire. two lanes of the inner loop were closed for the morning rush hour and the on and off ramps of connecticut were blocked. everything is back open tonig

at least two firefighters were injured battling the fire at anacostia high school shortly after noon. it looks like the fire was started by workers on the roof and tonight we're hearing from one parent who says he warned school officials something like in could happen. our kristin fisher joins us live from the school with more on that huge fire. >> reporter: we just found out that those two injured firefighters had just been released from the hospital, great news there and also as you can see, this fire is now out, but there are still so many questions about what exactly caused this fire, especially since as you said, this school has been under construction the last year and a half and what they've done is sectioned it off so that this part of the school is still open to students, but this part over here, all the way to your left, that has been closed off. that's what's being renovated and that is where the fire started. a d.c. firefighter is holded into an ambulance after falling through the roof of anacostia high school. >> we had two members injured. one went to the hospital. what
