look at the snow depth near anchorage where the ceremonial start took place on saturday.. only a centimeter on the ground at most. temperatures have been extremely warm across that area. in fact it was warmer in anchorage this past february than it was here in atlanta, georgia, where the cnn world weather center is. that's not something that we would typically see. this is the route that they would normally take, starting in anchorage, through willow to nome. but with anchorage only receiving 1/3 its normal snowfall for the season you can see why they moved the start of the race into fairbanks, about 200 miles to the north. temperatures at the moment for the entire route is in fact below freezing i should say. having a little bit of a computer difficulty there, but nonetheless, the cold snap of weather will continue for the entire race. a few snow showers in place. they're going to have great conditions for this 968-mile journey between fairbanks and nome alaska. and also just a quick update we are over the winter weather in the eastern half of the united states. i've got

what we had was the ceremonial start to the iditarod dogsled race taking place in anchorage. there was less than an inch of snow on the ground if any in most places. so they had to truck in all of the snowfall from a few hundred miles to the north. the race traditionally starts on the first saturday in march, starting in anchorage and ending in nome alaska. this year however, due to the lack of snow they had to make special arrangements. there's on average 16 dogs on each team, 25 checkpoints along the way, and the mushers, the drivers of the sleds, they must make a mandatory 24-hour stop at some point during the race. so basically, what they had to do was move the start of the race about 200 miles to the north in fairbanks. this is what the route would typically look like in an average year but because anchorage has only had one third of its average snowfall for the season can you imagine why they had to move the start of the race to the north. look at these temperatures though well below freezing for the entire route. we have a cold snap and a few scattered snowshowers. we'

as you approach the center anchorage. so roberta said it. a lot of the winds gusting up the morning and we have a couple of high wind advisories. these are ones separate from the national weather service, these are ones issued by chp and they drive around and say it's a pretty windy bridge. i should issue a high wind advisory, right now for the san mateo bridge that's what the flowing sign is right there. on westbound 92. the drive time is still 15 minutes and you may also hit some overnight road work especially for the next -- oh. 10 minutes or so on the san mateo bridge westbound and eastbound. eastbound is actually scheduled to wrap up quite a bit later but fortunately no delays, it is countercommute. here's a live look at westbound 580 the scuffs are causing a wind advisory as well for the altamont pass area. so if you're traveling westbound or eastbound looks like the delays are cleared out -- have cleared out eastbound a little bit. westbound though looks great. 15 minutes to take you to 680 and the dublin interchange. that was certain
