joining us now is kate andersen brower. she's the author of team of five, the presidents club in the age of trump, as well as the residence inside the private world of the white house. kate, good morning. i'm so grateful to have you. you have, of course, written the book on this, and this is going to be a very rare situation in the age of donald trump at this carter funeral, to have all five of these living presidents together in the same place. what does it mean to you as you understand the arc of history for this most exclusive of fraternities? >> we haven't seen them together since 2018. george h.w. bush's funeral. and, you know, i think it's important in a time when there's so much divisiveness to see this as a country, that there are these sacred traditions that go beyond politics. um, i think especially i'm looking forward to hearing steve ford, gerald ford's son, and ted mondale walter mondale son, read eulogies that their fathers had promised to deliver at carter's funeral because carter and ford were very, very clo

joining me now are kate andersen brower, mark preston, nia-malika henderson, and kai bird.hank you all for being here. appreciate it. kai, you are a biographer of the of the late president, and i was just reading something that you wrote back in 2023 when he went into hospice, which time ago, by the way, just speaks to the entire, um, the strength of this man that he was was in hospice for so long. where you write, among other things, mr. carter remains the most misunderstood president of the last century. >> why? well, he was an outlier in everything from his childhood growing up in archery, where he was the only white boy virtually in this hamlet where all his playmates were african american children to when he became governor and then declared on his in his very first day in office that the time for racial discrimination was over. he was an outlier. well, let me tell you this story. he he his first day in office, he came in and he signed a proclamation issuing amnesty for all vietnam era draft evaders. his second decision was to hire mary prince, an african-american woma

presidential historian tim naftali joins us now, along with kate andersen brower. she's a journalist and the author of several books, including team of five, the presidents club in the age of trump, and the residents inside the private world of the white house. thank you both for joining us, kate. you had the opportunity to interview both the former president and the former first lady in their home. that must have been a treat. what was that like? >> well, it was incredible. i went down to plains in 2018 and interviewed them. i got to go listen to one of his sunday sermons, his his sunday school services, and they were i was struck how absolutely normal they were. i mean, they a lot of people have said it, but it's absolutely true. they lived in this, uh, very, you know, relatively modest home, a ranch house that they had built together in the 60s. and, you know, i sat with them in their living room. they sat next to each other, um, on the sofa and offered me water that they gave me themselves. and i think i was just struck by how close they were in that moment. yo
