anderson? >> obviously in the past, that is the biggest reason that hamas has taken hostages. they held on to him for years and negotiated the release of more than 1,000, i believe, palestinian prisoners. i talked to an idf spokesperson a couple hours ago who raised the idea that hamas released americans in particular to, kind of, either weaken american support for israel or, kind of, fan the flames of those who might look at that and say, oh, you know, now let's negotiate more. >> yeah. and when we've heard from hamas, they have put a particular focus on the foreign hostages. and in fact, when these two americans were released today, they said that they want to send a message to americans, what they call the fascist biden administration was lying. there is, obviously, the chance, anderson, that they could be trying to offload, if you will, the foreign hostages in order to, again, ingender some good will or perhaps some leniency when it comes to those other countries that could then apply that

>> not really, anderson. it's -- you know, if they were confident that there was someone inside and maybe that there was a danger of hostages or others getting hurt, you know, you might want to take advantage of the element of surprise in your approach to the residence. and in a situation like that, there is more of an urgency. but that's clearly not the case here. there is -- they have forsaken any element of surprise. they've been yelling at the house for quite some time. so what you're seeing here is a very slow and steady escalation of technique. they start with the safest, cleanest, lowest risk thing to do, and that is to pull up, stand behind your armored vehicles, and announce your presence and demand some sort of compliance. whether you are confident there is someone in the building or not, you would always do that first. it seems that that technique has exhausted its relevance here, and they seem to be repositioning now to step on to take next steps. which could involve things like sending drones up.

>> well, again, this depends, anderson. i hate to say this, but, yes, when israel went into lebanon against hezbollah in 2006, it was a slow operation, and unfortunately they paid the price for some of that. at the same time, in tw2014 whe the idf went into gaza, they had 70,000 forces go in on three different axes. that was a fast operation. there was also a lot of defensive positions that hamas had established. they've only improved those defensive positions and the tunnels underneath, the subterranean operations, so it could be a massive invasion and a massive incursion on four or five different axes. it could be a smaller invasion to gain more intelligence to use air forces to strike them. it could be targeted operations on specific information that the israeli army has in a tunnel complex or in the bottom of a building. it could be any of those things. that's where really hamas is on their back foot, but they're in a very key defensive position underground. they can withstand some of this targeting, and unfortunately,

>> well, you're absolutely right, anderson. this is essentially the only time we like to publicize the shooter, when police are actively trying to find this person. they are appealing to the public, if you see this person to call 911. looking at that imagery right there, what you see is a high-powered assault-style rifle. if we center in, you can see there's a long magazine. what that means is this is a lot of fire power, eight lot of ammunition that someone can fire in a short period of time. the individual appears to be wearing cargo pants there. we've seen in past incidents they bring additional mag zazin to these situations. we're seeing reports of different incidents. police have been sends out these orders, shelter in place orders, because we believe that this individual has gone to these multiple locations. just because there are multiple lokes don't necessarily mean there are multiple shooters. it appears this person is on the move and authorities are trying to find this person. we do know there were a host of law enfor

anderson? >> alex marquardt, as nic robertson was saying, it seems unlikely that the president would come before, while any ground operation is underway. so, i'm not -- it would seem that this may be a sign that there won't be a ground operation until after the president leaves. alex, what are you hearing? >> i think that's probably right, anderson. and there are probably two signs that the ground incursion would probably not start in the immediate future. now, this very big sign, that president biden is going and the unlikelihood, if you will, that the israelis would launch it while president biden is on the ground. but also all the reporting that we've seen that essentially when israel wants to go into northern gaza, they want to make sure that they're doing so when most of the civilians have been cleared out so they can focus their efforts on those hamas militants. anderson, it does occur to me that this is the second time this year that president joe biden is going into an active war zone.

anderson? >> now that the former president has left new york, not expected in the courtroom, or what is next in the trial? >> so their cross-examination, the longtime account will continue with his attorney, trump's attorney say that could go all day. but inside the courtroom, it's a demeanor has changed dramatically. the temperature has come way down. the judge even wished one of the government attorneys a happy birthday, and the trump's attorneys even objected less to all of the questioning. so this will continue now as we get into the nitty-gritty of these financial, statements at the values of these properties. anderson? >> all right, thank, you joining us now cnn legal analyst joey jackson and -- she is a defense attorney specialized in white collar crime and a -- columbia university. obviously, there is the politics of all of this. did the former president help himself or hurt himself in just legal turns? >> so legally, anderson, what it is about is what happens in the courtroom. this is

>> this is the second time within 24 hours, anderson, that we've seen large protests. at the bottom of the hill below the u.s. embassy which is a mile up the hill behind a barrier set up by the lebanese security forces and protesters twice last night and this afternoon tried to break through the barrier, the lebanese security forces were firing tear gas and water canons in their direction and eventually the protesters were cleared out of that square at the bottom of the hill by the lebanese army, but of course, that's just one of many protests across the region and amman, jordan, we saw a very large protest in morocco, yemen, istanbul and elsewhere. this has sort of sent jitters through, for instance here in lebanon, the diplomatic community. the united states is now advising americans not to travel to lebanon and has told family members of staff at the embassy and also non-emergency personnel that they can leave on a case by case basis. saudi arabia put out an advisory to all its nationals in lebanon to leave immediately. the uk and france are telling their nationals

no doubt, anderson, whether u.s.r israel or qatar leading the negotiations along with egypt, they would like to see much bigger numbers. we heard from the idf earlier today there are some 222 hostages who are in custody. we certainly don't want to see the hostages coming out two by two. the qataris are pushing for much bigger numbers. dozens or scores of the civilians, foreigners still in custody. in terms of the mechanics, anderson, obviously, hamas is not going to come face-to-face with israeli officials as they hand over prisoners. so, you have the u.n. which operates independently inside gaza. you have the red cross which operates fairly independently inside gaza. what happens today, like it did on friday, the same mechanism of hamas handing the two captives over to the red cross, they will then be taken somewhere along the border. with don't know where. there are two formal large border crossings in southern gaza. one goes into egypt, one goes into israel. frankly, there are a number of places all along that fen

anderson. >> we go to the strike group. we have the latest. these are two of the navy's most powerful warships. what's the plan? >> anderson, this is broadly speaking a message of deterrence as the biden administration watches what the fighting at gaza could spread beyond those borders. sending the strike group into the region, the uss ford deployed last week and the uss eisenhower send in the last two weeks is how seriously the biden administration is sending a message not only to iran but more importantly iranian proxies, specifically lebanese hezbollah on israel's northern border. there have been skirmishes between israel on that northern border but hasn't escalated beyond that point at least but so far looks to be contained. everyone knows how delicate and volatile that situation can become, and part of the reason of having not only the carriers themselves but what comes with them as a message to iran, hey, stay out of this one. >> what's the latest on efforts to get americans out of gaza? >> this is an ongoing effort but a very very diffi

but the experts we have spoken with, anderson, have looked at this damage. they say that this dt look like an air strike. this is a new piece of video that cnn obtained exclusively. a crater in the parking lot at the hospital. this appears to be where the projectile struck. as you can see, it's relatively small. and again, these experts say that a crate their size is not what you'd see after a missile strike from a jet or from a drone. it could be, they say from a smaller rocket. i also want to show you these satellite images from before and after the strike. this is from above, of course. this is the hospital. this is the parking lot that we've been looking at before the strike. and this is after the strike. and afterwards, we see this blackened parking lot, the charred vehicles. but there is no evidence of a major crater. and this is very important. there is nothing visible here that points to a crater from an air strike. now anderson, since those horrific attacks by hamas back on october 7th, we've seen thousands of israeli air strikes all across the gaza

let's go to anderson cooper in tel aviv where there are air raid sirens. anderson? >> reporter: yeah, jake, the sirens started sounding about 30 seconds ago or so. so we anticipate there's a little bit of cloud cover, so it's a little hard to see the sky behind me. we know if rockets come, they come from that direction, the direction of gaza. we have yet to actually see any interceptors from the iron dome going up into the sky. so it remains to be seen exactly what this alert is. there have been -- i think there's only been like one or so today. and now it seems like there was a -- the sirens are going off. so not sure what that was. i didn't see anything in the sky or hear any -- okay. there was some interception there. just didn't see anything going up. as i said, there's cloud cover, a little hard to see in the sky. but pretty soon there will be an all clear, i would imagine, and then people come out from the shelters if they did seek shelter. it's -- you know, as you know, it's a pretty regular occurrence here over the last several days or so, jake. >> anderson,

>> anderson, there were indications, there were warnings within the u.s. intelligence community and the israeli intelligence that there could be an attack. however, they were not terribly specific. they were rather broad, sort of, more strategic analysis about something that could happen. there were three separate pieces, three separate reports. two american, run israeli, in the days leading up to the attack last weekend. september 28th was the first one, a u.s. intelligence report saying there could be a cross-border attack by hamas from gaza. then a couple days later on october 5th, just two days before the attack, there was a cia wire that said that hamas -- that there was an increased possibility of a hamas attack from gaza. and then finally, anderson, right before the attack, the day before on october 6th, there was an israeli report that was circulated among u.s. officials that indicated there was some unusual behavior by hamas. that was passed on from the israelis to u.s. officials. but none of these three were all that out of the norm, and they cer

>> well, it depends, anderson, because it's so complicated.ou have so many kinds of tunnels in so many locations. but you have to imagine beneath gaza city, you have another city of tunnels. that's where they're hiding, not the head of the hamas. they are cowards. they left already to hahn yoonis, to the south. we know that. >> you believe leadership of hamas has left south? >> we know they're cowards. the main leadership is outside, and the leaders in gaza, they left already to the southern part, but we will find them. we will hunt them, and we will kill them. >> obviously it's impossible to know. but given past operations on the ground, what time frame are you preparing people for here? >> so i discussed this with my colleagues in the military, and we realized it's going to be a long operation. and the people in israel are ready for that. you know, more than 100,000 israelis moved out from their homes from the south and the north. the economy is not in the best shape today, but we are ready to pay that price. so we're getting ready for a lon

and it's the hospitals, anderson, really feeling the pressure. the situation going from critical to dire. you are entering the al shifa hospital in gaza city. this is just one minute, one day. doctors tell us it could be any minute of the last 16 days. it is a scene from hell. many of the patients are young children. the reception area now a triage center. and everywhere you turn, another casualty. every one of these people has been ordered by israel's military to evacuate the hospital, including the staff already outnumbered and overwhelmed. and as the punishing bombardment continues, the wounded keep flooding in. doctors say there's nowhere else for them to go and no way safe to transport them out. >> now we have half an hour. it has overloaded our emergency department and our o.t. department and our -- department, overloaded with patients. >> reporter: dr. marwan warns the situation is about to get dramatically worse. the hospital, he says, is just two days away from running out of fuel, needed to power the generators that are keeping the hosp

anderson? >> and here in israel a nation readies the next phase of a war. one of the largest troop mobilizations in the country's history is now under way. we have been witnessing the build-up of forces over the last several days, amassing along the gaza border and at other sites. the bombardment of gaza continues. in less than a week of fighting both israel and gaza are reporting more than 1,000 deaths. both sides are bracing for things to get a lot worse, obviously scrammage to get civilians out of the crosshairs. a senior official telling cnn talks are happening to allow palestinian civilians in the gaza strip to perhaps exit into egypt ahead of any israeli ground invasion. that was something that the national security adviser sullivan had intimated yesterday in a press conference. he had talked about diplomatic efforts under way to try to figure out about potential border crossings. but we're still waiting for some sort of resolution on that. obviously, the egyptian border -- there's the eg

>> so this is a very delicate dance that's going on now, anderson w multiple parties involved. trying to broker some agreement. basically, hamas is asking for a pause that they say would allow them to consolidate all the different hostages they have into one place, they would release them in exchange for fuel and in exchange for aid. israel has said no way you're getting a pause because if we give you a pause you'll be able to regroup and consolidate your own forces, then the americans are saying to israel, please can you avert or at least delay a ground invasion, because we're worried that that would have a negative impact on these hostage negotiations. source telling cnn they believe maybe the israelis you know will delay somewhat but they don't think that time frame will slip beyond a few days so clearly we're getting to a very crucial stage with these hostage negotiations, but there's still a huge amount of daylight between the various different parties that are involved. idf today dropping leaflets over gaza imploring ordinary civilians living there to provide information

that's happened multiple times, anderson. we look at spice that have gwynn information to foreign governments, and there is that reaction of the intelligence community or the military or the state department to try and mitigate the risks that can occur with this. but you never expect it out of a president. i mean, he is giving secrets to people, and carrying secrets into his home where, you know, everyone that is read in to classified documents signs a piece of paper that says i will not divulge this because each of these secrets have something to do with national security and divulging it could cause either grave or serious harm to the united states. and it appears that there have been incidents with president trump just willy-nilly giving that, because he wants to appear big. there have been times on cnn where you all have asked me questions that i've known the answer to because of my background and because of secret information i had, but i'm not going to give it up to you. i mean, maggie will try to get it from anonymous

anderson cooper is in tel aviv where sirens are going off. anderson? >> yeah. these air raid sirens have started 30 seconds before we came on air. we saw one interceptor going up from iron dome. we have not seen -- heard any explosion and now it seems like sirens are down. it would seem whatever it was, was either intercepted at a greater distance or it's done. oh. that was an interception. just took a while, perhaps, for the sound to reach us. there's low cloud cover so it's a little hard to see exactly all the rockets when they come, they come from that direction, obviously, the direction of the gaza strip. today secretary of state antony blinken was back here in tel aviv meeting with israel's defense minister and newly formed cabinet. that's one of the big developments that occurred on the ground today in israel as the military gears up for the next phase of the war. fighter jets struck hezbollah targets in lebanon as well. cnn's nic robertson is in sterrot. nic, talk about what you've been seeing. the tempo of strikes near you slowed down today? >> it did.

good to be with you, anderson. this is one of the thorniest issues -- have to deal with both diplomatically and i think from a moral perspective. on one hand i visit almost every day with families of the hostages. and these people come from all different walks of life. they all agree that israel should not allow this human aid corridor to go through. we shouldn't agree to a pause to increase the amount of aid going into gaza. they say this is the only leverage israel has over hamas to secure the hostages. we don't even know how many hostages they have. we think they have about 242, but many families are unsure, uncertain, and they certainly don't know the physical medical state of their hostages. they say if you let this human aid corridor go through, there's no way we're going to have that type of leverage over hamas. on the other hand, you're right. the scene of palestinians in the south of lebanon -- south of gaza, excuse me -- lacking food, lacking basic necessities, increases diplomatic pressure on israel and
