do you think it's not clear, anderson? >> i mean, it was it was one of the more astonishing parts of that press conference, although, i will say the assumption that he wouldn't do that was just that, an assumption. he has never said that he wouldn't. and he likes to leave himself maximum room. he is really testing what the public is going to tolerate with this suggestion about pardons for people connected to january 6th. now, what some of his advisers were saying a year ago or six months ago was, well, some of these people who were arrested, you know, were were barely in the building or were not part of it or were and so forth. and that's why this is going to be acceptable to people if we issue these clemency grants. but, you know, suggesting pivoting from he got asked a question specifically about 100 and roughly 140 police officers who were injured that day. and would he issue clemency grants to people who were involved in those incidents? and he answered by saying, ashli babbitt, a supporter of his, was the only person

let's start with anderson and anderson. as you are there, what is the latest that you're learning from officials on the ground? >> well, the i'm here on bourbon street, as you can tell, bourbon street has reopened. businesses have reopened. there are people here not hugely crowded, but there's a lot of people here. the bars are open. that was an important for the city to get it back up and running. just as a symbol that this city is not on its knees and it is resilient. as you know, there was the college football championship game here as well today. so there have been a lot of people in the city. i talked to the the superintendent of police, anne kirkpatrick, a couple of hours ago, right before bourbon street opened. here's some of what she said. what is the latest you can tell us? >> all right. so the fbi did a briefing about an hour and a half ago, and they were able to give updates associated with the investigation. the investigation is at the stage where they have confidence that this is a lone wolf. this is a lone act

anderson. um, we're doing okay. we're both alive. so that's the most important thing. uh, my father in law is safe down in the san diego area. i'm back home in the berkeley area, and, uh, he did lose his house. we did confirm that. but the most important thing is that we're alive. >> your dad, i understand, has has parkinson's. he is recovering from surgery. i can't imagine how concerning it must have been for you with dealing with your father in law, getting him to safety. can you just talk a little bit about your. evacuation? >> yeah. uh, it was probably the most intense thing i've ever dealt with in my life. so i was staying at his house. i was taking care of him because he recently had surgery just a few days ago, and i was alone. we didn't have a car because my wife took the car and the kids to go back to northern california. northern california. we get a ping about the fire, but it was an evacuation order. it was, you know, there's a fire in the area. so at first i'm just casually, hey, d

we're going to go back to anderson shortly. but first, let's go back to cnn's nick watt, who is in the area of pacific palisades. and, nick, tell us what you're seeing. >> well, jake, we are seeing more smoke, more flames. this just has not stopped. if you pan around, i mean, this is downtown pacific palisades. palisades village. it looks like a war zone now. and already people are starting to ask questions. how could this have happened? now we know that there were strong winds. we know we've had a drought here in california for a long time, so we had a lot of dry brush. but there are issues. for example, 3:00 in the morning, the firefighters, the water ran out for them in and around this area because there was just so much demand for water to try and douse these flames. they ran out also, you know, county and city officials have said that they prepared for maybe 1 or 2 fires. they did not expect four. and i mean, it's surreal walking around a neighborhood that you come to. i have dinner with my kids in here. i come shopping ov

yes, yes. >> anderson. a group of us decided to stay, uh, knowing that it was the only way to save our homes. we don't get, uh, fire trucks or, uh, any rescue vehicles up there in a short period of time. since we were pretty isolated. and, um, from previous fires from people who, uh, have lived there a long time. they said, if you want to save your house, you have to stay. and my wife, helen decided to leave, uh, shortly before the fire started coming over the mountain. and, uh, my neighbor, uh, lars, uh, went down to his house and started his, uh. uh, prevention. i got my fire hoses out and got my pump started. uh, that failed pretty quickly. um, then i was stuck just pulling water out of our pool. the pool cover had melted, and, uh, i didn't have any electricity to, uh, wind that back up, but luckily, i was able to access the water, and i just kept running back and forth, putting out small fires against my house. um, one fire started in the back of the house, another off the living room. uh, on the video

>> anderson? the devastation along the strip of pacific coast highway is is really hard to describe. we're watching what is a really lovely sunset. otherwise, through the through the haze of this smoke here. but these are the multi-million dollar views that has this as some of the most valuable real estate in the country. but this five mile stretch between topanga and carbon canyon, i'd estimate 75% of the homes have been turned to ash. this this pushes the price tag. obviously, these are people's lives. um, these are families that lived on this little strip of land and loved this place so much. there's also restaurants that are iconic on the west side of los angeles. moonshadows reel in the beautiful little seafood place where people got engaged and celebrated. those are jobs. so it is devastating. i was up in the palisades yesterday and thought that was something like i had never seen. this reminds me of lahaina and paradise combined and expanded. it is really unreal. but coming up later in the

uh, anderson, you know, as. the colleagues to me, although there were some very significant similarities. vehicle borne attack, use of a firearm or use of explosives taking place on the same day. rental cars from the same company, electric vehicles, all those kind of surface level similarities. there were some fundamental differences. and for me, the new orleans attack is classic i.s.i.s., right? it's it's literally out of the instruction manual that i.s.i.s. pushes out to its to its supporters and adherents looking for mass casualties in a cheap and kind of, uh, obvious way. the use of a secondary weapon to continue the killing after you crashed the vehicle. all that stuff is designed to kill as many people as possible in a high profile event. that's going to get a lot of attention. this attack seemed very different to me. you've got a guy who drives from colorado to las vegas. he gets there early in the morning. he ultimately brings the car to trump tower for the final time. he goes once and takes a look at it

>> yeah, it's really remarkable, anderson. now, it's not the first time we've seen a military member. um, you know, well, i should say we have we have isolated instances of people in the military who have been recruited by or drawn into extremist ideologies at various points in the last few decades. but this is the first one that i can remember. when you have an active duty, uh, as john was just relaying highly specially trained special forces operator engaging in this sort of an attempted attack. um, we don't know yet if there was specifically a political motive here or an ideological motive. i suspect that we'll learn more when law enforcement has an opportunity to really start digging into his background, start accessing devices that might unlock some of those mysteries for us telephones, computers, laptops, ipads, things like that. that might show us his browsing history, his contacts, his activity on social media, all the typical places we go to try to understand someone after they've done something like this. there are t

anderson. i mean, when you think about the level of planning, you know, isis has instructions for followers about how to do a ramming attack. it gives requirements to get a large vehicle, but one that can go fast, find a crowded street, but one with narrow sidewalks where pedestrians will be in the street. it talks about having secondary weapons so that when you finally are stopped or crash, you can continue the attack. and we know when he finally crashed into that crane, he jumped out and opened fire. and luckily for everybody, the police were on the scene to engage him in that gunfight. and quite heroically, two of them were wounded. but you know what the president referenced earlier today is that he had remote control transmitters that were connected to the two pipe bombs that were placed in the coolers, two blocks in every direction. so it appears that his vision was that as he was running over people and 911 calls were coming, that first responders and crowds would be streaming in from eit

cnn's anderson cooper is live in new orleans for us. what are you learning, anderson? >> well, there's a number of new things that we have learned, most notably and most immediately, our john miller is reporting based on law enforcement sources. he's spoken to, that the attacker used what's described as a rare organic compound in the explosive devices that he had set previous to the attack in those coolers that he placed in two locations in the french quarter. this apparently this rare organic compound has not been used before or seen before in the united states, and is therefore raising questions among law enforcement about how this attacker jabbar may have gotten access to it. so that's one very interesting note that our john miller is reporting. we've also learned that the attacker jabbar set fire to his airbnb prior to the attack. now, you may remember, uh, cnn got exclusive access to the door camera images of jabbar as he was unloading his truck outside that airbnb late in the night prior to the attack. we saw him going back and forth from that truck there. you se

anderson. we're just learning right now from our affiliate out in los angeles, kabc, that the death toll from the eaton fire is now five. that according to the los angeles county sheriff, i know you've been on the scene now for several hours. how have things changed in just the time that you've been there yeah. >> so this is part of the eaton fire. as you know, the eaton fire, you know, started up more of a wildfire and then it jumped into these residential areas. it's i mean, it hasn't changed much. i kind of thought it would have died down by now. but what you see is the. yeah, the buildings that have destroyed eventually there's nothing left to burn and it's just smoke coming out of them. but these fires keep jumping. so these are fresh fires. this is brand new. this is not something that house there that that now in just in the time we've been talking those flames. now you see them pouring out of the that attic window. they're soon going to spread to the entire roof. there's a prius parked

jason anderson was the youth pastor. jason anderson: didn't fall asleep listening his sermons. keith morrison: but more than that, the pastor and his wife, james and tanya flanders, were known for their big hearts, their charity. and that's when for a third time a family took in marie. esther bridges: she's saying that she was there until she got on her feet. keith morrison: but a whole year went by , and then what was coming couldn't be hidden. the story floating around, there had been an abusive boyfriend who abandoned her and left her pregnant. and in july 2011, marie gave birth to a baby girl and named her grace. the pastor and his wife took care of both of them. jason anderson: it was explained to me that they were helping her out, that she was kind of down on her luck. keith morrison: she was by all appearances saved, spiritually by faith and practically by the pastor and his wife. so imagine the surprise when a strange group text message popped up on the phones of her family and friends. can you still remember the words of that mass text? she said that yesterday she left

um, you know, anderson, it's really tough. but if i could ask for three things, i just wish one we could, you know, all get back to our homes and help those firefighters. uh, take this on. i know that we've got to leave those serious firefighting to to the professionals. but when it comes to brush fires or embers, we can help. two i'd love to see the public services like, you know, water and power be turned back on for those residents who do want to be there to try to save their homes and and maybe three for the people who just can't be there to fight the fires and help the people. it's been so many people in our community who have lost their homes, who've lost everything. help them. help them find a way through this tragedy. >> richard, let me ask you, your neighbors, did you know all of your neighbors before this? i'm wondering. i mean, are these people you've you've known or these are some of these people you didn't necessarily know, but they just saw you guys in need and did what they could? >> you know, i think we have a

cnn's anderson cooper is in topanga, near the palisades fire. anderson, what are the current conditions like and how are fire crews handling any new flare ups? >> jake, i'm on medley lane in a community called fernwood, which is part of topanga canyon. >> there has been a battle raging here for the last hour and a half. we have seen more air assets deployed in this one spot in that last hour than i've seen in any other spot in the last several days. it's been extraordinary to witness right now. you see this fire truck here? they're trying to save this community. um, of of fernwood. there's, uh, a number of structures here, a number of houses here, all of which have survived thus far. so they are now this fire truck is just pouring water, laying down this this curtain of water, just trying to soak up, keep this whole area wet. we've had more than a dozen, uh, helicopters, fixed wing aircraft flying very low over us. there was a fire down in that direction. um, which i'm not sure if it was a structure fire or some vehicles on fire. i've heard conf
