anderson cooper joining me live. congratulations, that's an incredible interview. my first question, is there anyone managing this man? does he have a publicist, team, assistant, anyone helping guide him through this forest of bad pr? >> often when you go to an interview with somebody at this kind level there is a whole team of people behind them. there's pr people, lawyers, attorneys, things like that, manager. there was none of that in this case. he had two friends at the house clearly trying to help him. i'm not clear even if he has hired attorneys. i was told there have been some attorneys at the house earlier in the day. but it's not clear to me he had actually, you know, employed them. so, you know, i think he very much is trying to figure this out. and kind of find his way through this. i think he believes there's still a path for him to retain ownership, to keep the team, and i think he's hoping to, you know, be able to convince people that he's genuine in his apology. >> i expect someone of his ill k, certainly, he has the means to afford professionals. he

the bottom line here, i thought, mel, that the whole purpose of him talking to anderson cooper, right, was to be contrite, to apologize, to explain himself, not otherwise reembroil himself and reconfirm what we knew from the beginning. what did this have to do with magic johnson, right, what did it have to do with him making further disparaging remarks about anyone else. finally, as to his wife, i think she's in a lot of trouble too, with regard to her stake in ownership. because she may have been complex sit in covering this thing up. >> if she helped to draft that comment and that comment was, in fact, misleading or false, then, yeah, i think you've got a really good point. by the way, that they don't seem to worry about v. stiviano's comments anymore because they have public comments. when you're a leader and you go on the tv, that is in the course of business. call me crazy. again, he didn't, it seepms, an guidance before that interview. >> you don't need guidance, ashleigh, you tell it how it is. mel, you don't need guidance. >> you on the other hand. >> i need a lot of guidance.

he said repeatedly in the interview with anderson cooper, i'm not a racist. i've never been a racist. it is his refusal to understand that racism is subtler than that. because he didn't understand that, he never worked on it, that's how he ended up being the bigot that he is today. >> and that's the teachable moment. the nuance bias that so many people have. they need to check themselves. look at donald sterling. he is the teacher. look at him. if you have views like that then you are racist. you are sexist. you are bias. >> as magic said, living in the stone age. >> i think one of the things we're missing is that donald sterling has been a practicing racist for decades in a way that's affected thousands upon thousands of the most vulnerable residents of los angeles county. and those are the people who lived in thinks slums for so long. his big mistake in this case is taking it out of sphere and projected it on someone with a lot of power, both literal and capital in magic johnson. i think every word that donald sterling said, a question looms over this. how
