and my job was to be short and tight and now bring you down to the 30 feet level, and one thing that's the most dangerous part of being a pedestrian, and that's crossing a street. and talk about this work i have done on pedestrian design and safety, and i have boiled this down to a formula, and because engineers love formulas. and you should look at the four "s" formule a slow the traffic, slow the crosss and let the pedestrian be seen and let the flashing and flow the traffic, we heard that you can do that in a lot of different ways. and the next slide shows traffic calming, but in san francisco i observed you have a lot of signalized streets with one way signal jagz. -- signalization, and you can slow the progression of those streets and in downtown portland we have it at 11 miles per hour, and that's friendly and makes it possible to drive a bike in a lane except if you are on a hill. and second, shorten the crossing distance. and we can reassign the road space and next slide, those people are out in the street, and why not give that part of the street to the pedestrians. and i am carmen chu and the supervisor and i am here and glad of this topic and we have been working closely with the departments in the city, and not only metropolitan and transportation authority and other folks that have a big part of the solution, and one thing that we looked at in district 4, and this is an issue that touches all parts of the city, and not just west but east and pedestrian safety issues continues to be one of the most important things for my district. we have for example, 19th avenue that cuts right down our neighborhood residential neighborhood and it's a state highway and we have seen many incidents along that corridor, and there is nothing more important than to protect the pedestrian an -- pedestrians that want to walk and all individuals. and i am happy to see everyone here and these pedestrian safety issues are big and important. and look at not only the engineering and enforcement and what the community component of this strategy. and thank you for coming out and thank you for wishing me a happy birthday, and i hope the rest of the day goes great, thank y

and behalf of the district and the board of education, we send our condolences to kathleen's family and also to the mission high school community. also, we actually lost two members of our family last week and the second was another teacher from everett middle school and i don't think principal carochi is here but we also lost cassandra roberts and i'll read a little bit about her on behalf of principal carochi. cassandra roberts was an outstanding language arts teacher at everett middle school who began teaching in august of 1997. in her time at everett she touched the lives of all that knew her and was an inspiration to the entire community. her favorite phrase was with "i believe in you." all students listened and admired her. her lessons were engaging. many students tried to tell her what a positive influence she had on their education and life. at everett she was awarded the cesar chavez peace award which is given to outstanding individuals for exemplary services to the community. she's always been a caring, loving, knowledgeable and dedicated educator, the kind of educator you rem
