for the knife and you will get suspended and have consequences and on the way, and you start asking questions and what is going on? what is behind this? i am being threatened and i was are withed about my safety and there is a bullying issue and i brought a knife to school because i am scared what is going to happen on the way home, so you have to look past just what is going on with the initial "what do you have?" and dig deeper, and it's just some tools and some help, but law enforcement can be involved with. >> and that's what we're hearing too with facebook when things come up in facebook for example or instagram or twitter and the tip of the iceberg. what you see is not what you get. it might actually be somebody victimized retaliating or against or reacting to something that happened off line or at school. do you have examples of how bullyings and targets can change hats? >> with that example he went from a prerp prerp traitor to a item in the same conversation. we get the uncomfortable nobody wants to deal with situations. i know that nobody wants to look at a kids having nak

people and understanding we have the same rights and obligations and starting with the adults and i go back to the adults because the adults really have to tow the line here. they really have to walk the talk. i cannot tell you how often i of involved in large mentoring efforts and now in two different places, in l.a. and arizona. i cannot tell you how often the teachers are the ones that set the tone whether we have a respectable environment or and not part of that is education and we have to educate the adults that spend time with the kids and the federal government will come up with the giens and 37 factors or 40 and frankly most of us won't remember and unless we're prosecuting and looking for the elements of the crime and whether we're going to file a case or not. i i think we need to be more global than this and this works and we need to illustrate the things that aren't acceptable? what is the impact on the victim? what is the impact on everyone else? and working together to solve the problem. >> nancy. >> in some school districts and teachers when i brought up this issue i g

we offer it all over santa clara county and in english and spanish and vietnamese and that is one example of what we do. a second initiative we are working to make happen is something called "school link services" where there's all of these different resources floating out there to help children, to help young people, but often it's not centralized in the school and so it involves a lot of cooperation and collaboration between all different county agencies and we're sphere heading that, so those are some of the efforts we have taken in our office, and again from a perspective of the prosecutor and it really offends our sensibility for someone to be taking advantage of to be harmed or abused and we want there to be justice for that victim and we want that offender to change their ways and we want that the climate and culture in which the bullying takes place begins to change and it's not acceptable so we use a combination of hard power and soft power. >> jeff thank you. in south east asia and the earthquake and tsunami in japan and last year, and during hurricane katrinabt and friends community. so we work as ambassadors for our community and we help change people's minds and hearts about who we are and what we care about. besides providing humanitarian aid, we try to inspire hope in all of our projects and we have found that hope is really just as important as aid, if not more so. and we have worked with a lot of communities in desperate situations arounded world and we found that providing a little bit of humanitarian aid and a lot of courage and hope it is amazing that people in desperate circumstances can do to improve theirs life. so seven years ago we really have a feeling that in the united states, we really need to increase our hope also. and we decided to do that by creating a global art project, the world, tree of hope. and what you see behind you is a live, 23-foot christmas tree and it is covered with 10,000 pieces of oragami and most of it is white cranes and all of the white cranes on the tree are inscribed with people's wish and hopes f

low gpa and attendance and we were looking for what to do and this showed up at our door and a light came on and put the students in groups with partner mentors and what success would we see? and what we saw last year and this year our students significantly out perform the district for attendance and gpa and i know there are a lot of pieces to the puzzle but i believe the mentoring part is critical. our tenth graders are always checking in with us. last semester many of my students are 2.0 and well on track for graduation and one of the significant programs we offer and we're tracking it to look at the data and in addition we have the one-on-one mentoring and i would be remiss if i shouldn't shout out to the resources folks and being a mentor increasing principal haze given me an incredible lens how to support the students at a higher level. thank you so much.
