andre schiffrin has uncovered a new treasure trove of dr. seuss cartoons from world war ii archives. this new book is bringing those wonderful cartoons and illustrations from this moment. andre schiffrin has been an editor for 50 years. as founding director of the new press. his most recent publication before dr. seuss is political education: coming of age in paris and new york. one of the chapters at a seminar year and a half ago. i am pleased to note that andre schiffrin at the same time donated a wonderful archive, and editorial, worked with industrial democracy which provides a very interesting window into the birth of a new life. andre schiffrin will be joined tonight by milkman, author of a new deal and journalism, the story of p.m.. paul teaches english at the new york city school system and has a ph.d. from rutgers university. andre schiffrin is going to say a few words to provide some context to the book. then andre schiffrin will rejoin the conversation and all of you will join us hopefully. andre schiffrin, the floor is yours. >>

instead, they chose to force votes on controversial nominees such as david hamilton and andre davis.given those nominees' records, it was no secret they would engender opposition and that it would take some time for their records to be examined and a debate prepared. i do not know the reasons for not calling up judge martin's nomination sooner. i hope it wasn't to purposely delay this noncontroversial nomination in order to create an illusion that a lot of judges are being obstructed. certainly, we have been accused of obstructing nominations in the last few months. and we have heard these allegations repeated on the senate floor and in the press and often supported by inaccurate and misleading information. some of my democratic colleagues have said they would confirm judicial nominees at the same pace that the democrat-controlled senate confirmed president bush's nominees. i think my colleagues should be careful what they wish for because president obama's nominees have fared far better than president bush's. for those who were not here then or for those who don't or won't remember,

$50 here and there and i did get out the vote program work talk about politics to other people or andre seniors to the polls or take my little ones to the polling place with me so i'm doing my job. now's the time to do more than that if you are so inclined. but to actually get out there and throw your hat into the ring. let me just -- i want to have time for questions but before i do that let me mention a couple of other statistics like a fascinating going into 2010 presidential race on the ballot. one is there are 34 republican members of congress who represent districts president obama carried in 2008. there are 49 democratic members of congress that john mccain carried into the sunday. so right away you start with sort of 84 districts just by using this simple linear measurement. 84 -- 83 districts that would seem to be in some kind of play. then there's a very fascinating number you don't hear about very often. 25 congressional districts that are held by democrats who won in 2008 but there are districts president obama won in 2008 but president bush carried in 2000 and in 2004. and
