this has been growing at a rapid rate since at least 1980 as andrea bernstein points out.k what that important -- and andrea's such a great reporter. what that important data reminds us is that there has been a bipartisan consensus on the acceptability of extreme inequality for the last 30, 40 years. i often say the last 30, 40 years we have been playing in america in ronald reagan's ideological stadium. right? there's a left side of the field in that stadium. there's a right side of the field. but it's reagan's stadium. the same way everybody in american politics from the '30s to the '70s was in fdr's stadium. so nixon, the right side of the field in fdr stadium, created the epa. that was what being a republican meant in that time. in our time through the clinton years, the bush years, the obama years, people had different opinions and certainly different policy agendas but it was all within a framework of markets know best, entrepreneurship is the thing we should unleash above all, government is bad. the right said it frontally. the left was kind of defensive about let's
