abc's andrea fujii has more. >> reporter: this morning, pleas for change from the family of a black man killed at the hands of tacoma, washington, police officers. >> the criminal system needs to be made over from the head just take it all off. >> reporter: 33-year-old manny ellis was beaten and tased while his hands and feet were shackled. his death ruled a homicide with an enlarged heart and meth intoxication as contributing factors. cell phone video shows officers restraining him and he can be heard saying he can't breathe. >> i can't breathe, sir. i can't breathe. >> reporter: the officer's body cameras were not rolling at the time but witnesses say ellis did not fight back. according to authorities police jumped out of their vehicle and attacked ellis after a brief conversation with him. it's not clear what led to the confrontation. ellis had just left a convenience store and was walking to a friend's house after playing drums at his church. officers claimed ellis was trying to open car doors, but his family says that's not true. >> there was raspberry filled doughnuts and a water

here's abc's andrea fujii. >> reporter: this morning, a courtroom bombshell in the murder trial of molliethe man accused of killing the t 2 h ity of iowa college do it. instead, cristhian bahena rivera claims he was kidnapped and forced to drive two masked men and one of them killed tibbetts whose body was found in a cornfield. on day six of the trial, the 26-year-old mexican national took the stand in his own defense recounting this never before heard theory. >> did you tell law enforcement the truth that night? >> translator: not all. >> reporter: he testified that on the day the 20-year-old was killed, he got out of the shower to find two strangers in his living room. bahena rivera, who speaks little english, says the men wanted him to drive them in his car, one man armed with a gun, the other with a knife. >> translator: that i shouldn't do anything stupid and everything was going to be okay. >> reporter: as they drove, bahena rivera says they passed tibbetts running three to four times. he claims the men then asked him to turn the car around and one got out heading towards tibbetts d

abc's andrea fujii shows us. >> reporter: this morning, video of a random vicious attack in a new yorkway station as a good samaritan rushes in to help fight off the suspect. >> i saw a substantially sized knife, yes, and i heard a woman scream. that's enough for me. >> reporter: he was waiting for a train in manhattan wednesday night when he saw a man come up behind an unsuspecting woman, stabbing her multiple times. security video shows the large knife in the suspect's right hand. that's when he jumped into action. >> jumped on his back. and that took us down to the platform surface. i'm trying desperately to keep him down, face down, because i know that if gets up, or if he can turn on me, and he has that knife, now i'm a potential victim. >> reporter: once the suspect was pinned to the ground, bystanders piled on top of him, the knife falling on to the tracks. moments later, officers arrived, arresting the suspect. this is the second attack at the union square station in two days. the mayor promising a safer environment as the city reopens after the pandemic. >> he said the other d

abc's andrea fujii has the latest. >> reporter: this morning, an arrest in the disappearance of a coloradoher of two who vanished nearly a year ago. authorities in chaffee county charging suzanne morphew's husband, barry, for her murder. months after barry pleaded for suzanne's safe return even offering a $200,000 reward. >> if anyone is out there that can hear in that has you, please, no questions asked, however much they want, i will do whatever it takes to get you back. honey, i love you. >> reporter: suzanne was last heard from on mother's day 2020 and said she was going for a bike ride alone and when the 49-year-old didn't return, a neighbor called police. at the time the family said barry morphew was in denver more than three hours away. law enforcement scoured the area where suzanne went missing including her home where investigators were seen carrying bags of potential evidence. charges against morphew include first degree murder, tampering with physical evidence and attempting to influence a public servant. >> today is not the day for celebration, nor does it mark the end of this
