abc's andrea fujii reports. >> this morning detectives are investigating whether a south american criment break ins at the homes of several high profile athletes, including chiefs quarterback patrick mahomes. >> it's frustrating. it's disappointing. >> the homes of mahomes and teammate travis kelce were recently burglarized, along with the homes of bobby portis of the milwaukee bucks and mike conley of the minnesota timberwolves. authorities believe there are similarities among all the crimes. states, including california, colorado and michigan have also reported break-ins carried out by south american gangs. >> i've thought more often about pulling the shades, which i never did before. >> just this week, police said this burglary of a home near detroit was carried out by a south american gang targeting high end homes. >> they're very transient, so they'll hammer an area for a while. they have no ties or connection to the community, and then they move on. >> and in california, authorities are warning about so-called burglary tourism when criminals from other countries enter the u.s. on

abc's andrea fujii reports. >> this morning a chemical compound found in drinking water that scientists have observed for decades has now been identified. but the question remains whether it could be toxic. >> we all know there are chemicals in our water, and this one now has a name, but it is certainly not something for people to be alarmed about. >> scientists published their study in the journal science, calling the byproduct chloronitrile. it comes from chloramine, a chemical first added to water in the early 1900s that helps prevent harmful organisms in drinking water. but when chloramines combined with other naturally occurring compounds, it produces chloronitrile, which scientists don't know much about any chemical that you're putting inside of water, which that in itself is another chemical, could have byproducts and downstream effects and potentially long term effects. >> so all chemicals need to be well studied. >> experts say about 113 million people drink tap water that exposes them to chloronitrile, and it's been detected in 40 drinking water samples. its properties are sim
