andrea mitchell from our d.c. news room, thank you. >>> now to a drama that played out earlier. it was all going as planned on board an ethiopian airlines jet that is until the co-pilot locked the pilot out of the cockpit of the aircraft and hijacked the people on board, with over 200 people on board including 11 american passengers. what followed was a tense few hours in the sky as the hijacker flew the aircraft to switzerland. we get more tonight from nbc's ayman mohyeldin. >> reporter: inside this ethiopian flight 702, passengers in their seats, hands on their heads as swiss police prepare to board the plane on geneva. on the tarmac outside, police surround the plane, escorting more than 200 passengers and crew off one by one. the ordeal began hours earlier at the ethiopian capital, addis ababa, enroute to rome. but it never made it. instead it was hijacked by the co-pilot, a 31-year-old ethiopian. the hijacker redirected the plane over italy, which scrambled fighter jets after the plane signalled a hijacking in progress. over switzerland, the hijacker radioed that he wanted

i'm kristen welker in for andrea mitchell. the new interim government has issued a warrant for the arrest of ousted president viktor y yanukovy yanukovych. russia is openly questioning the legitimacy of the leadership and criticizing the west for recognizing that new government. for latest from ukraine, i'm joined by chief foreign correspondent richard engel. you have been there on the ground. we know how fragile this situation is. what's the latest there today based on what you're seeing? >> it's actually not very fragile here in kiev. what we're seeing now is an expansion of this conflict as people are starting to realize what the geopolitical consequences might be. very strong statements from the russian foreign ministry and that singing behind me, the protest square where this revolution began has become something of a memorial square and filled with flowers and people coming here all day to pay respects for the roughly 100 people in the country over the last 72 hours. there is increasingly religious component to this as t

. >>> good day, i'm andrea mitchell in washington. we have breaking news. justice department correspondent pete williams joins me now from the newsroom and this involves eric holder. >> eric holder is in the hospital in washington this morning. he was taken there this morning after what the justice department says was his feeling shortness of breath and faintness during a morning meeting. he was taken by ambulance we're told to the washington hospital center, the medstar hospital, where he's now acourtiaccordinge justice department, alert and talking to doctors and good conditions. i talked with someone in the meeting where this happened this morning. it was his regular 9:30 staff meeting on the fifth floor of the justice department in a big conference room off his private office. according to this official, during the meeting the attorney general said he wasn't feeling very well and excused himself and said, you all keep talking, he stepped out of the room. went to his adjoining office and made the decision that he should go to the hospital. and but they s

joining us now, andrea mitchell, nbc news chief foreign affairs correspondent and host of "andrea mitchell reports." thanks very much for being with us. >> you bet. >> we got this readout tonight of vice president biden calling the ukrainian president in the midst of the street battles going on in the capital city in kiev. why, why is it that it's vice president biden calling and not president obama? is this something you would expect to happen at a higher level or a lower level? why him? >> it's a high level but not the highest level, and in fact, the very fact that putin has said, stay out of my backyard, would mean that it would be almost too much of an affront for president obama, himself, to get involved. one of the issues here has been the tug-of-war between putin saying this is my territory and the united states saying -- have a vested interest in this. look at what's happening in the streets. these like, battles. it doesn't look real. what we're seeing in the streets of kiev. yet it is all too real. and the deaths are real. and the stakes are very, very high. and think back to what

. >>> and good day, everyone, i'm andrea mitchell in washington. it's hope that today's agreement between ukraine's president and opposition leaders can end the carnage on the streets of kiev, tony is deputy national security adviser and joins me from the white house. what are you hearing about the agreement and whether moscow has signed off on it? >> well, first of all, andrea, 24 hours ago ukraine was on the verge of imploding economically and politically. now thanks to this agreement, there is a way forward and way out of this crisis. we're not out of the woods yet. it still has to be implemented but i think ukraine has pulled back from the brink and that's thanks to terrific work by the european foreign ministers and leaders and united states and close koordation with them and by the courage of the political leaders in the ukraine to compromise and get this agreement. >> it was unclear from the beginning whether the rebel leaders really had control over all aspects of the opposition. do you think those in the square and those elsewhere in kiev
