nbc's andrea mitchell has details. >> reporter: bill clinton on a campaign trip in arizona. attorney general loretta lynch visiting the phoenix police. they run into each other on the tarmac at the airport. it's 108 degrees so they board her air-conditioned government plane along with her husband and visit for 30 minutes. >> there was no discussion of any matter pending before the department. there was no discussion of benghazi, no discussion of the state department e-mails by way of example. >> reporter: saying it was social, about golf, grandchildren, and visits each had paid to former attorney general janet re no who is ailing. but with the justice department investigating hillary clinton's e-mails, on radio today donald trump pounced. >> i think it's so terrible. i think it's so horrible. i think it's the biggest story -- one of the big stories of this week, of this month, of this year. how bad a judgment is it for him or for her to do this. >> reporter: the attorney general says the e-mail investigation is being handled by career agents who follow the facts and the law.

andrea mitchell standing by with a spokesman for the clinton campaign effort. andrea? >> -- i know she went into rewrite last night after president obama's speech. is it done? >> i think it's going to be worked on probably up until the last minute and fed into the prompter. we are all so excited about tonight. there's a palpable level of enthusiasm on the floor. i think she's really going to take this opportunity to communicate to all americans. last week you heard donald trump really just appeal to his core supporters. this is going to be a message from hillary clinton tonight that can appeal to democrats, independents and republicans alike. >> and at the same time, she has a trust factor, you know it, she's acknowledged it. how explicitly will she acknowledge the problems she has in winning over people's trust? >> well, the beautiful thing about this week is we not only have hillary clinton giving a very important speech tonight but it's really the culmination of a week's worth of speakers from president obama, former president clinton and the first lady who have all

let's go visit with andrea mitchell, who has covered the clintons a long, long time. i'm sure you know a lot of these stories, andrea, but have you heard them told by president clinton like this before? >> never before like this. this is a very different kind of speech. their polling tells them that they have a problem, as you know, with young people, young women in particular. and this was to try to fill in the gaps of the resume. to try to explain who she was as a real person, and that's why he started with in 1971, i met a girl. and these young college girls who have not related to her in the new hampshire primary and elsewhere, maybe they can think that that yale law library is something that they're familiar with and also the public service that we've been talking about, working for women against trafficking of women, working for children, all of these decades. so that was the purpose here tonight. savannah. >> andrea mitchell, thank you. >> and one thing we should note, there has been a lot and we've talked about it, the history of the night. her nomination as th

we begin fittingly, with nbc's andrea mitchell who has been following the clinton campaign from the startandrea, your thoughts on what we just heard. >> reporter: well, i've been following hillary clinton for decades, and i have to tell you the smile on her face when bernie sanders is joining her. this was absolutely, as far as the clinton campaign is concerned -- they could not have asking for anything more from tim kaine today. he broke into spanish and talking about his son, matt, the marine about to deploy to europe. the tornaand his wife devoted t education and legal aid. and they've got a substantiative argument. it visually does not match what sanders and the progressives and other minorities want. but tim kaine just substantiatively gave a great rusing speech. hillary clinton spoke for about 17 minutes, speaking not about herself but introducing tim kaine. she spoke to his biography, then he got up and spoke -- she sat on that stool and watched every minute of it. we saw her reactions. it was very deliberate but a sharp contrast to the unusual roll out of mike pence only a week ag
