i'm andrea mitchell in washington. supreme court will decide whether donald trump can be held criminally liable for actions taken while he was in office. that decision by the high court to hear the case in late april, two months from now, will delay mr. trump's d.c. election interference trial further. late wednesday, illinois became the third state to find the republican frontrunner ineligible to serve under the 14th amendment's insurrection klaus, or to be on the ballot. the decision to remove him from the ballot in illinois hinges on what the supreme court will decide in a similar decision in colorado. that case has not been decided. an appeals court rejected trump's attempt to put his civil penalty on hold. the former president may not have the cash to pay up according to his own lawyers. the fee is due in just under a month. joining me now, former u.s. attorney paul charlton and "washington post" national editor, phil rucker, co-author of "i alone can fix it." paul, here is how the supreme court describes the case

i'm going to go to andrea mitchell, my good colleague and friend andrea mitchell. we can broaden this out. i know you were on the call earlier, so you have a lot of up to date information. give us a sense of how the administration is thinking about this, because for americans who recall that obviously we had a war in iraq. it used to be a sunni minority government in iraq, but iraq has always been a shiite majority country governed by saddam hussein, but it is a shiite majority country, which is how it has an association and affiliation with iran. talk about how this has all metastasized from attacks on shipping by one group, which is an iran proxy, to now the killing of three americans by another group which is an iran proxy. and how close does that bring us into direct conflict potentially with iran? >> such a good question. the through line is iran, of course. iran as the sponsoring country that arms, weaponizes all of these proxy groups. that doesn't necessarily direct them, and the u.s. has been careful to say that they hold iran responsible because they back

this story being broken by nbc's andrea mitchell who joins me now. e can you tell us, andrea? >> well, this has been very carefully arranged, sensitively arranged. as you know, yulia spoke hours after her husband died. it was an electrifying moment. she said to the audience that she wanted to be with her daughter, with her family at that horrible moment but she thought to herself, what would alexei do, and that's why she was there so memorably, electrifying the audience, as they say, and in the days since, of course, this has become more controversial in the campaign because of the comments by donald trump. never condemning vladimir putin for what happened and, in fact, comparing what he has suffered, he says from the prosecutors, from the courts, here in the u.s., comparing that to what happened to alexei navalny who was tortured for two years, tortured in prison, went back to russia after an assassination attempt, tortured in prison, sent to a gu lag, in isolation, and died after 24 hours earlier appearing on video looking relatively healthy. also t
