andrea mitchell has a look back at their romance. >> reporter: it's a love story that spanned more thanrter and first lady rosalynn carter surpassed 75 years of marriage. they went on their first date in 1945. though rosalynn initially rejected the first proposal, the couple tied the knot on july 7, 1946. their love has seen them through raising four children, a presidential term, running the family farm supply business. humanitarian work around the world and a cancer diagnosis. they've even gone from sharing a kiss on the presidential debate stage to a smooch on the kiss cam at a 2019 nba game. the relationship hasn't been without tribulations, though. the couple reflecting on writing a book together on "today". >> we really did have a terrible time writing the book. >> we thought perhaps the last chapter would be about our divorce. >> reporter: former carter white house communications director says the couple has always worked together as a team. >> they treat each other as equals, and they always have. >> reporter: the 39th president also sharing this marriage advice with judy woodru

andrea mitchell now joins me and you knew the former president and covered him for years. what do you see as a lasting impact of his time in the white house? >>'s presidency was heavily marked with triumphs and tribulations as lester recounted including the camp david accords which remains one of the most consequential peace deals to this day and for which he won the nobel peace prize and among his tribulations was the oil crisis that started overseas and caused soaring gas prices, long gas lines and the energy crisis here at home. he was a newcomer to washington and didn't have strong relations with congress and struggled to get many of the programs past. in 1979 the iran hostage crisis overwhelming the final year of his presidency. the hostages were taken in 1979 and released memorably on january 20, right after ronald reagan was sworn into the presidency. it was clearly a decision by iran and the ayatollahs to deny jimmy carter the solace of getting those hostages home. but of coururse, it was the post presidency that was so remarkable and his work for habitat and his e

and then andrea mitchell is with us as well. what else do we know about the services being planned for jimmy carter? >> reporter: whenever a former president passes away, it is up to the family to determine exactly how they want the funeral services or memorial services to remember and honor his legacy. in this case, we are waiting for the carter center to put out the schedule, that as you mentioned, a state service will be held for former president carter in washington, d.c. on january 9. between now and then, his body will be moved from georgia, which is about three hours away from here in plains, georgia, to atlanta. he will likely stay here in atlanta for a few days. there will be an opportunity for members of the public to pay their respects and see the casket in the meantime, there is a growing memorial that you can see outside of the carter center. people are leaving flowers, candles, a chalkboard, and a jar of peanuts to remember his roots, where he came from, a peanut farming family, of course. >> andrea, you have cover

andrea mitchell has this exclusive reporting for us. understand benjamin netanyahu has agreed to a kind of broad outline of a deal. is that right? >> he has agreed to that broad outline but there are still more details to be worked out. the big deal here is hamas has now made some big concessions. hamas, weakened by iran being weak, by hezbollah being almost wiped out, well, wiped out of its leadership, the collapse of assad, so it's lost its allies. lost its support. and a big factor according to u.s. officials speaking to me today was that donald trump last week went on truth social and said that there would be hell to pay in the middle east if hamas did not release the hostages before he takes office. that removed one big factor in that it made it very clear to everyone that the incoming president wants this done now. he doesn't want to wait and do a victory lap later. he can take some credit for it as he will most assuredly do if this is, but in any case, hamas has agreed israel can remain temporarily in gaza with its forces in key

joining us now nbc news chief foreign affairs correspondent andrea mitchell, matt bradley reporting froms. so andrea, netanyahu's testimony has been years in the making. what should folks know about this case and what could it mean for netanyahu, and the country he leads? >> it's the most serious of the cases. there are several cases against him. he's the first sitting prime minister to take the stand. he's not the first sitting -- rather the first former prime minister to go to jail. there is a history of prosecutions after they leave office and similar to the u.s., they cannot be -- they cannot go to jail, let's say, or pay a penalty, for any crimes they're convicted of while they're in office. so throughout this tumultuous year, more than a year militarily with israel, there have been accusations by critics that he is trying to prolong the war because he won't have to pay account for this and to keep in office, to keep this very difficult right wing coalition together. in any case, this involves some $300,000 in allege bribes he and his wife allegedly took, and he took the stand for f

now, nbc news is reporting, andrea mitchell is reporting that u.s. that they are closer to a deal. they may be have never been closer to a deal that hamas has dropped some of its s demands. how optimistic that a deal can get done, but could it get done before joe biden leaves office? >> there's a little feeling of lucy and the football. it only takes one side to start a conflict, in this case hamas, but both to end it, israel and hamas. you have to have something both sides are prepared to live with. hamas seems to be willing to accept a limited israeli military presence around gaza for some time. hamas has come forward with a list of hostages and so forth. israel is prepared to release palestinian prisoners inside israel. so yeah, i think there's a decent chance. i always thought, quite honestly, it would be more likely to happen after january 20th. i thought this might be something that the prime minister of israel would go for the 47th president rather than the incumbent. but i think at some point it will happen. the real question is what happens
