. >>> thank you so much for joining us, i'm andrea nakano. we start this evening in oakland where tens of thousands of people celebrated black history month with the black joy parade. the annual parade has grown each year, becoming a positive destination for the town. john ramos has the story. >> reporter: in 2018, a pair of oakland residents decided black residents had a reason to hit the streets rather than just to protest, and that is how the black joy parade began. ♪ [ music ] ♪ when the parade began seven years ago, founders elisha greenwell and amber lester had the idea to bring some joy to the often turbulent streets of oakland. they wanted an event that would bring the same positive energy as san francisco's pride parade. >> just started to get together with the community. knocking on doors, trying to see if this is something the community wanted. obviously it was. >> reporter: now parade director alicia knight says an initial event of a thousand people have turned into tens of thousands, as people come from all over the bay area to c

andrea nakano shows us what they got actually today in sonoma county.. >> reporter: here in sonoma county it has been raining all not. we have not had the heavy downpour and gusty winds. many here are relieved the storm is not too bad so far. >> reporter: as the rain soaked the north bay, bryan from santa rosa was busy filling up sandbags >> it was not easy. i mean, i thought heart surgery was worse. i should not be doing this kind of stuff. >> reporter: he filled 10 bags for himself and his neighbors to make sure the alley to their homes is drivable. >> the city does not maintain it. so, i filled in the potholes with it. >> reporter: not too many flooded streets but drivers ran into this. chp officers were kept busy with numerous accidents. this elderly driver drove off of the road twice in a span of roughly half an hour. the national weather service issued a flood advisory for low-lying areas. lagoona, santa rosa, commonly floods during severe storms, it flowed fairly swiftly but water levels stayed low. to prepare for the storms, several fire agencies pooled their resources together to

and tonight andrea nakano reports some are crying foul after a brewery with very close ties to the team suddenly announced it's out. >> reporter: as soon as the announcement was made on social media, rumors started to swirl on whether or not the a's played any part in this. the team, though, says this is not the case at all. it's an event oakland a's fans look forward to every year. fan fest meant it was almost time to play ball. the the team didn't host their traditional event this year, so the oakland 68s teamed up with the last dime bar to throw a festival for the fans. >> it's just a celebration of oakland sports. it's a celebration of our community. it's a celebration of local businesses. >> reporter: so when drake's notified them about backing out in what seemed like the bottom of the 9th inning, the oakland 68s were disappointed. >> i felt like someone would have cold feet and it's a shame it's drake's. >> reporter: drake's gave a very vague reason for backing out, they say. >> due to unforeseen circumstances, which seems kind of fishy. >> reporter: that left a lot of room for sp

this time around our andrea nakano went back there tonight to see how people are getting ready. >> reporter: this year's storms have already flooded this community. it's a mix of mobile homes like this one and cottages. as you can see here, residents have already stacked up the sandbags to try and keep the water away. >> every time it rains hard, this creek rises, and you're in for a rude awakening. >> reporter: it's a feeling that's hard for charlene to describe as she waits for back to back atmospheric rivers to come through this weekend. >> it's discomfort and stress. you know, i can't change anything, but i have to prepare. >> reporter: preparation will be key. charlene has already lifted up her garden on concrete blocks to keep the plants from getting ruined. inside her storage unit, the same thing trying to get all of her belongings as high off the ground as she can. >> it can be painful to lose your memories and your personal belongings. >> reporter: this sycamore cottage community already experienced devastating flooding last month. five creek overflowed, spilling water to the doors

andrea nakano shows us businesses in the area ready to fire up their registers for the year of the dragon>> reporter: streets will be closed, and it's going to be packed in san francisco for the lunar new year parade. it's going to be a big celebration. but many of the shops in this area are looking forward to the extra traffic to bring in business. ray tam is a bartender in chinatown. >> we're famous for chinese maitais. >> reporter: this particular drink was highlighted on anthony bourdain's show, and now people from all over the world come to order this cocktail. >> light rum, dark rum, and then maitai and pineapple juice. >> reporter: tam says he's already noticed business picking up the last couple of days with the lunar new year festivities bringing in more customers. >> it helps a lot. more people come in into the bar and it helps the culture in chinatown too and helps business a lot. >> reporter: in union square, the annual miss chinatown pageant was being held. this event has been held for 66 years. one of the co-chairs is a san francisco native that won the crown in 2016. >> it

. >>> thank you so much for joining us, i'm andrea nakano. it is a first alert weather day. the national weather service is warning of flash flooding and high surf. let's get straight over to first alert meteorologist darren peck. >> there was an important feature in the radar you showed a second ago in terms of that heaviest rain of line coming our way. and you can see that showing up there. you see the very well organized line that's moving in towards marin. that is the actual cold front. we're experiencing some of the heaviest rain right now in marin, but that will move over the rest of the city and the peninsula pretty soon. but before i get back to that, this is the main storm. that's the one getting here for the second half of tomorrow, and then it's going to stick around awhile. the bigger impacts are coming from that one. we'll go over that one in the complete forecast. for right now let's just update you on storm number one. if you look at first alert doppler, we'll come in for a close up look at that well organized line that's heavier showers along the cold front.

as andrea nakano reports, his life was almost very different and was almost over very quickly. >> reporter: he's handsome, fluffy, cuddly, and one of a kind of it's rare to find a bunny this outgoing and gentle. >> he's probably one in a million. >> reporter: josh roe adopted alex, the great three years ago. >> we ended up rescuing him from a meat farm at modesto. >> reporter: the flemish giant weighs 30 pounds and enjoys cruising around in his mini car. he loves meeting people and gets love everywhere he goes. >> he's very dog-like, but i think he thinks he's part human, too. he's got to be in the middle of everything, but he's a good boy. >> reporter: but life for alex, the great goes way beyond making friends and having fun. he does photo shoots so he can donate money to charity. he's also a certified therapy animal and volunteers as part of the wag brigade at bay area airports and visits patients in hospice care. >> i truly get gratification just from people enjoying him, enjoying seeing him and not just seeing a rabbit, but a rabbit who truly is enjoying this. it's rewarding in its ow

. >>> thank you so much for joining us, i'm andrea nakano. a significant storm has started to make its way across the bay area. let's take a live look at conditions right now and get straight over to first alert meteorologist darren peck, darren? >> andrea, the first thing is there are big distinctions between the amounts of rain and flooding concerns coming here and going to southern california. because the concern is much bigger in southern california, and that's what we're hearing cal oes talk about. it doesn't mean we don't have our own share of this storm, but a we do. this is live, kind of a few light showers showing up now. those waves come overhead in the next couple of hours. watch what happens when we're all sleeping, the predawn hour, that's when some of the best rain will fall for us. that's 3:00 tomorrow morning. we could play that all the way through now into the 8:00 hour. there's really a focus there on the north bay with widespread steady rain. here we are tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. still going. we got it going in the long-range f

i'm andrea nakano. an arsonist is on the loose tonight in san francisco, the person caught on camera setting a tesla on fire this weekend. police say this was the second tesla torched that night. this happened pretty much in the same neighborhood. this was destroyed while parked in soma, the second car destroyed just a block away. da lin spoke to the owner of one of the cars tonight who shared video you'll only see here on cbs news bay area. >> reporter: this is one of the arson locations. the arsonist is linked to at least two tesla fires. investigators want to know who and why. an arsonist caught in the act, the person sets papers on top of the front passenger tire of a 2020 white tesla model y. he uses a lighter to burn the papers and walks away. we're speeding up the surveillance footage to show you within minutes the front portion of the model y is engulfed in flames. a neighbor shares this cell phone video. the flames shooting about ten feet into the air. this happened on saturday morning around 1

i'm andrea nakano. >>> emergency crews across the bay area pushed to the limit tonight as they responded, pulling him out through the windshield. miraculously, he was not injured. taking a live look at current conditions on our bridges, the rain still coming down, but in some places it's nothing like it was earlier tonight. >>> darren peck with more on what's still to come with this storm. >> there is still more to come, about but it's going to be temperature. we're past the widespread continuous steady rain the first half of today. now we're looking at these isolated lines of heavier convection that move through overnight. there's going to be wide areas that aren't getting any rain at all. watch on futurecast. there's going to be a focus for the south bay from santa clara valley southward. we'll see several redeveloping lines of rain from the southern end of the santa clara valley over the santa cruz mountains and down 101 keep redeveloping overnight into tomorrow. that's probably one of the more active areas. about sunrise tomorrow we'll see other bands come through. there's a nice lin

that was just one of two chases happening in the bay area today at about the same time and andrea nakano shows us the other one technically isn't over yet. >> reporter: at first glance this looks like a man parking his gray pickup truck in east oakland. he casually gets out and slowly walks up the street until two motorcycle officers from the oakland police department show up. the suspect takes off running, jumping into a backyard. he jumps fence after fence at times stopping to take off his sweatshirt and take a break, but he doesn't give up. he keeps going from one backyard to another. at one point he jumps into a yard with two dogs. police say he's wanted for driving a stolen car. eventually he hid himself in a backyard shed and somehow managed to give police the slip before they moved in. around the same time a pair of suspected thieves were on the run in contra costa county after a robbery at this taco bell in lafayette. >> first he tried to buy food, but he just had like three bucks. so we just gave him a glass of water and then he was drinking. he was sitting right here and then a

. >>> good evening, i'm andrea nakano. one storm is moving out to make way for the next one, and it's expected to be much stronger than the first. similar scenes across the bay area today. seemingly constant rainfall. luckily, it wasn't too hard, and we didn't see the strong winds that came with the storm nearly two weeks ago. but even the calmer conditions can still bring downed trees and power lines like this one in downtown santa rosa. the fire department treating out this video and telling everyone to be careful with the stronger storm coming in tomorrow. now we send it over to meteorologist darren peck to find out more about the next storm. >>> the nice thing about the storm today is it was very nicely mannered. it came in, and it left. it knew not to overstay its welcome. but that won't be the case for the one tomorrow. it will stick around from sunday perhaps until wednesday. today we got an inch of rain in the north bay. there are still a few light showers over the south bay. and enough rain has fallen that we stil

thank you for joining us, i'm andrea nakano. tonight, we're taking a deeper look at crime in san francisco. >> we are definitely doing better. >> reporter: san francisco mayor london breed says despite the city's perception, crime in the city is actually down according to newly released numbers. but some business owners aren't feeling that reality and san francisco still has a perception problem when it comes to crime. our max darrow has the story. >> reporter: we have the lowest crime rate in 2023 than we've had in ten years, not including 2020 when we shut the city down. >> reporter: that's the word from london breed and sfpd data shared by the office that is publicly available, shows the reality. when comparing january 2024 to january of 2023, property crime is down 32%. violent crime down 11%. during the same time frame, the numbers show a 39% reduction in larceny theft, which includes car break-ins and retail theft, and 11% reduction in robberies and a 20% reduction in burglaries. looking at january 2024 verses the three-ye

good evening, i'm andrea nakano. tonight is the culmination of lunar new year celebrations, that began two weeks ago when asian culture marked the year of the dragon. da lin joins us from the chinese new year parade, how is it going out there? >> reporter: it is popping, very loud and hopefully you can hear me with all the noise and folks behind me, the year of the dragon, the largest chinese new year's parade outside asia. it started about one hour ago, we are a block away from the starting point at third and market. organizers tell us there are 19 floats and 122 groups marching down, it is about 1.3 miles. there is a lot of color in this parade, because this is a colorful pageantry of the chinese culture and tradition. organizers also said that this is a way to recognize the impact that the chinese american community has had on this city. of course, as mentioned earlier, this is the year of the dragon so a lot of dragons on this parade route, i'm told the highlight is a very long dragon about 288 feet, that is how

i'm andrea nakano. brian is off tonight. the second and stronger storm of the weekend is here and it is not going anywhere any time soon. here is a live look around the bay area. you're probably already feeling the rain ort wind and maybe both. let's get right to first alert meteorologist darren peck for the latest on the conditions. >> andrea, this one will be more impressive than yesterday's storm. both from its intensity and for how long it's sticking around. we are just getting started with the system that will be with us probably until wednesday. but this leading edge and like the next say 10 hours is going to be some of the most impressive strictly from a rainfall standpoint. like how much rain we're going to get out of this. you can see one very impressive line right there, a well defined line and that will deliver pretty good rain with an intensity to it. we look farther off the coast. and so talking about this storm having more intensity. it's got more thunderstorms than the last one and probably more than the major
