staff nurse andrea santos takes down the details of a new patient who has just been brought in. he has self—harmed by cutting his abdomen. a knife. it's a case of self—harm from a man with mental health problems. mental health cas refused to accept him, saying he wasn't in crisis. did you go there, did you... he called them. yet the outside mental health assessment service, cas, refused to intervene, so he has ended up here. once again, our hospital's emergency departments are left carrying the can for so many other services in our community. the rush is thankfully over and andrea takes stock. unfortunately it all goes back to primary care. i think primary care needs help. to be able to support and avoid people coming into hospital. the gp service? notjust the gp, but community services as well. the thing about the nhs is that no matter what its challenges, we as a people still believe in the idea of a national health service, free at the point of delivery for everyone. and the cast—iron belief in that idea means there will always be hope it can be better, pushing us to make it
